Our iconic cafe was virtually recreated in Second Life by Gardenia Malheur. The self proclaimed film buff first encountered the Formosa in LA Confidential and knew she had to bring it to life in VR. Malheur managed to brilliantly capture our Old Hollywood vibe with incredible detail. See if you can spot any familiar artifacts in these stills! 🎥🐉🎞

We’ve come a long way from our humble beginnings in 1938. Curious about our storied past? Look no further!🐉

In 1938, Bobby Goodman, Stan Marcus and Goldie bought the Red Post Cafe and founded the Formosa.

Long-time bartender Lindy Brewerton recounted his first impression of the Formosa, “In August of 1946 I went to work at the Formosa. [There were] holes in the floor, little small tables and curtains on the windows.”

These holes were quickly filled when Jimmy Bernstein took over in 1947.

“Bernstein put carpets on the floor. Changed the entire bar. Put the mirrors on the bar shelves, got rid of all the whiskey bottles and he even put in an icebox. Jimmy was responsible for all the pictures on the wall. Axel Ostergaard, a master carpenter, had all the frames made which at last count was 754 pictures, front and back.” (Brewerton)

In the late 1940s, Bernstein partnered with Lem Quon and the two ran the restaurant together for decades.
Together, they put the Formosa on the map as the ultimate Hollywood hangout. Their regulars included everyone from Ava Gardner and Clark Gable to Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe.

After Quon’s death in 1993, his son managed the restaurant until the 1933 Group bought the Formosa and began restoring it in 2017.
