Read about how JSA incorporated many modern touches into this historically protected American Colonial Revival home in Hancock Park. Link in bio and feature begins on page 59.
Starting with the original footprint of this 1956 post & beam home, JSA refurbished the kitchen, enlarged the primary suite and designed a discreet addition to its side to allow for two children’s rooms with en suite baths. The entry was redesigned as a light filled piano room/library, complete with hidden desk. Everything served to maximize flow, function and light.
“Past & Present” in the new California Homes Magazine explains how a historically protected Hancock Park home was renovated with respect for original details but incorporated modern elements. Tranquil beauty was achieved with a largely muted palette. In the Living Room, traditional wainscoting and crown molding contrast with Mutina Tile from Italy on the fireplace surround and modern GUBI swivel chairs. The palette continues in the kitchen and breakfast room and was complemented by the warmth of oak cabinetry and brass fixtures. The primary bedroom had its ceiling raised to the rafters, a gable vent became a circular window, and modern furnishings completed its spacious and soothing feel. The chandelier and chaise lounge are from the Diva Group. Custom bedside tables were made with leather fronts. Read more about this fantastic project. Link in bio. .la
One of the ways JSA increased the square footage of this Hancock Park home was to cantilever two bedroom suites, creating a covered back patio. The look is more contemporary and open than the American Colonial Revival facade but maintained the traditional lines of the original architecture. First paragraph of 03.23.2009 article in New Yorker by Paul Goldberger: Save this story
It is probably fair to say that Andrea Palladio, who died in 1580, is the patron saint of every McMansion that has ever cluttered the American landscape, because it was he who brought architectural aspiration to the houses of the moderately wealthy. Before Palladio, serious architecture was for churches, public buildings, and the palaces of the richest nobles. Palladio studied the architecture of ancient Rome, codified its elements in a famous treatise, and started putting porticoes and pediments and domes on the houses of the landed gentry, conferring on them a feeling of classical pedigree.
Tudor Session Pt 3: If kitchens and baths sell homes, or so they say, check out these! The kitchen was completely modernized and wallpapered, but the JSA principal kept the cozy built-in table nook, adding leather to the existing bench. The primary bath (pic 3) was a departure in its modern design, while the other bathrooms in the home were meticulously recreated to their 1920’s specifications, using McIntyre Tile. Tudor 2: JSA’s principal took great care to restore the features of this Hancock Park home. The original floorplan was kept, as was the magnesite floor in the foyer. Doors, windows, hardware and original hardwood flooring throughout were refurbished and repaired, as were fireplaces and mantels. Read more in luxe. Link in bio.

Our Pacific project in Santa Monica is in initial stages of foundation work. The goal was to create a structure that interacts with both streets on this corner lot, but also has privacy, and opens up to a large outdoor space in the rear. The end result will be a stunning addition to the block.
Our Hancock Park project countered the traditional Tudor Revival style found throughout with more modern design in the upstairs family room. Artist Scott Waterman created this mural as a nod to Bauhaus artist Oskar Schlemmer. Heavily influenced by Cubism, ballet and theater, Schlemmer was fascinated by the human figure in space.
Looking out over the Westside from the iconic Johnson Residence. JSA added a pool and other contemporary elements which reference architect Craig Ellwood’s modernism without compromising it.
