Eau Gallie and Merritt Island Christian moved to 5-0 on Friday night as the Commodores won the battle of the unbeaten with University in dominating fashion, 40-7 and the No.2 Cougars defeated the No.3 Donahue Catholic Shamrocks in eight man action, 34-29.

Both are the county’s only unbeaten teams through five weeks of FHSAA play and six weeks of SSAA play.

In other action Viera (3-2), MCC (3-1), Holy Trinity (2-2), Merritt Island (3-1) Titusville (2-2), Space Coast (4-2), and Melbourne (3-2) were all victorious on Friday night.

Head coach David Kintigh returns for his fourth season, the 100th season for Melbourne High School Football. They’ll also play in their 1000th game later this season.

The Bulldogs offense showed balance with 399 yards with 202 in the air and 197 on the ground.

QB Michael Rogers completed 17 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown while he added another 70 on the ground and a touchdown.

His favorite target was Ty Fields who had seven catches for 82 yards and a score.

In defense Wyatt Votava had 11 tackles with two for a loss. Tyler Gagen and Jaxson Eagle combined for 17 tackles with Eagle forcing a fumble and Gagen picking off a pass.

While the Bulldogs will once again have a young team, this is a team that showed a lot during their kickoff classic picking up a win and they’ll be better in the win column in 2024.
