Sheriff Jay Russell and Deputies are mourning the loss of a retired fellow deputy and friend, Captain John Benton. Captain Benton passed away after a lengthy illness Sunday, March 17, 2024.

He began his career at the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office in the Patrol Division in 1978 and retired in 2000. Prior to joining OPSO, he served in the U. S. Marine Corp and then was a deputy for the Tensas Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Those of us who worked with and remember John know that he believed in Law Enforcement and believed even more in modern and thorough training of Deputies and Police Officers. He was a patrol deputy for a few years, but his interest and effectiveness as a trainer were recognized early and that is where he spent most of his career, working his way up to the rank of Captain. He was a P.O.S.T. certified and NRA certified fi****ms instructor. He held numerous certifications in various areas of training and was recognized through out Louisiana and the United States as a top-notch instructor.

John taught fi****ms for many years at our North Delta Academy and there are a lot of Deputies and Officers working in area departments today that remember his classes and his instruction ability. He also taught at various other training facilities throughout the country when requested.

We will miss John. Some of us stayed in contact with him through the years and we always enjoyed talking to him and sharing stories.
Please keep his family in your prayers.
Funeral Services are not planned at this time.

Sheriff Russell Recognizes Ouachita Parish Fireman for Lifesaving Effort On January 13, 2024, Reagan Avery learned of a boating accident on Cheniere Lake involving a boater that had overturned his kayak and was in the water. Reagan, a Ouachita Parish Fireman, launched a kayak himself to search and was able to locate the victim. He then called 911 so their location could be determined by rescuers that were responding to them by boat using GPS. While the two of them were waiting for the boat rescue, the victim lost consciousness. Reagan was able to hold onto a stump and keep the victims head above water to keep him from drowning until help arrived. As rescuers arrived, the victim lost his pulse. Fortunately, rescuers were able to perform rescue breaths until he could breathe on his own while transporting him to a waiting ambulance. The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released the next day.
Sheriff Jay Russell and Sheriff-elect Marc Mashaw presented the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Lifesaver Award earlier today to Reagan in recognition of his lifesaving efforts.

Sheriff Jay Russell and Deputies recommend these tips if icy road conditions develop:

Winter Weather Safe Driving Tips:

-Avoid travel unless necessary.
-Allow extra time for your trip.
-Drive slowly, avoid any distractions. Stay alert to other traffic and conditions.
-Drive in lower gears on hills and slopes.
-Expect overpasses and bridges, especially in rural areas, to be iced.
-Maintain considerable (more than normal) distance between your vehicle and others to allow more stopping room.
-Be aware of emergency responders and roadway crews that may be present.
-Do not go around any barricades blocking roadways. It is against the law and they are there for a reason.
-Be very aware of the possibility of BLACK ICE-a thin, transparent layer of ice on roadways that is virtually invisible. Black ice is common on bridges, overpasses, off-ramps and shaded roadways.
-For road conditions in your area and statewide, you can dial 511 or download the Louisiana 511 mobile app on your mobile device. You can also visit their website at www.511la.org

I just wanted to give an update on our Blessing Box at New Life Assembly of God.

Thank y’all so much for everyone who has been donating! Everyday I go by and there’s more food in there (this pic was from a few days ago). Jesus really loves this community and God is using y’all to help feed and take care of those in need!

It’s been getting used a lot and it’s been up less than a week! (Praise God) Some of you have asked what items go quickly and I will give a list of the items that don’t last long on the shelves and we really could use if you feel led:

Most popular:
-Toys & Christmas candy (Dollar General has a discounted area and I’ve found some reasonable toys there as well as candy in the Christmas isle! Of course the Dollar Tree as well)
-drinks (I keep it stocked with water bottles but other drinks go fast)
- TOILETRIES (these are gone VERY quickly. Toothpaste, toothbrushes, body soap, toilet paper, shampoo, Deoderant, feminine products etc
-laundry detergent (dollar general has a $1 isle and they have various brands of laundry detergent)
-Mac n cheese
-Spagetti noodles & with sauce
-ready to eat meals/snacks
-go go squeeze apple sauce
-baby wipes

Please message me if you have any questions. Again, we’ll take all unexpired items and are grateful for all/any donations! I’m just letting those who asked know what’s the most popular and needed right now 😊

God Bless & Merry Christmas!

First responders are those whose job is to respond immediately when there is an accident, emergency or threat. Paramedics, EMTs, EMRs, dispatchers, firefighters, and law enforcement officers are on alert, on call, and always there for us when we need them.

We celebrate First Responders Day to give recognition to those who put their lives on the line on a regular basis.

If you see a first responder today, thank them for their commitment and dedication.
