⛳ Our first Old Orchard Beach Fellowship Golf Outing was a blast! We can't wait to do it again next year!

That’s a wrap! Our time in Old Orchard Beach was filled with fellowship and connection to Him 🙌🏼

🎡 Humans of OOB Highlight! Lucy Hepburn from The Salvation Army Buffalo Kensington Corps was at the Pier with her Hands On team.

We asked Lucy about her time in Portugal with Hands On, and how ministry outside of your familiar church can impact others, whether in Portugal or Maine.

“It was amazing to see worship in Portugal. We visited five different corps, all special in their own way. We visited a homeless shelter, which I think was the most impactful place, on the people there and for myself personally. Another visit that really touched my heart was spending time at a children’s shelter. It was heartbreaking to have to leave each location. That was the hardest part of the trip: only having one week to spend at each corps. It’s one thing to be inside your own church with your group of people. But you never know the hearts you’re touching when you are outside. One song or one kind word can change a life. If just one person comes to church after seeing The Salvation Army, that’s a difference that we wouldn’t have made if we didn’t do these types of ministries.”

🎡 Humans of OOB highlight! Meet Lt. Tara Brown, corps officer at The Salvation Army Cleveland Temple Corps in Ohio.

We asked her what makes the Army’s presence at OOB so unique for her.

“We do a lot of things in different divisions and communities, but this is one that stands out the most, because it is so outward facing. There are a lot of events that only we Salvationists get to go and see, but this is a ministry for anyone walking by. They can hear the message of Christ in a practical, relatable, and amazing way. They can choose to stay and listen or walk away, but they’ve gotten that message. Someone will always come back, feeling impacted and ready to share their story. Every day I’m here, I meet someone like that.”

🎡 Humans of OOB Highlight! Zoe Zanders, a member of the Salvation Army New York Staff Band, performed a rap verse to “It’s about Band Time” at the March of Witness.

We asked Zoe about the importance of incorporating hip-hop in Army worship, and what it means for a growing church.

“If everything stays with past generations and what they like and are used to, we’re not going to attract new people to our corps. A church with no young people is a dying church. Hearing these new sounds is going to make others more interested in what we are presenting. And the energy at the Pier is different than in other places. I’ve done the rap verse in front of other audiences before, but here, it’s new. I like bringing that element of surprise to an audience.”

🎡 Humans of OOB Highlight! Bob Myers, Territorial Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) Director came to the Pier to enjoy the March of Witness.

We asked Bob about the similarities between the Army’s work in EDS and the Pier ministry at OOB.

“In disaster work, we’re connecting with people as they’ve gone through a painful crisis. Here, we’re connecting with them as they’re out enjoying a beautiful beach day with their family. And both of those are equally important, because we’re showing the love of Christ in two different situations. The root of who we are is connecting to people where they are.”

🎡 Humans of OOB Highlight! Captain Shareena Echevarria, corps officer at The Salvation Army in Bristol, CT, came to Old Orchard Beach with her husband, Captain Emmanuel Echevarria, and their growing family.

We asked her about how the Pier ministry will influence her own ministry back home.

“In the past year, we’ve invested more into the youth of the Bristol corps. I want to tell them, especially the dancers at our corps, that they can have the type of impact that the Pier has in OOB in their own community too. I think sometimes the public can have a one-track mind about what The Salvation Army is. The Pier opens their eyes to them. They see our arts ministries, our evangelism, and learn that we are a church that is outside for all to see. We’re not just an indoor thrift store. We’re going to share the love of Christ too.”

🚨 Due to the weather conditions, we'll be moving today's Beach Bible Study to the Tabernacle! Join us!

🎡 Humans of OOB Highlight! Captain Jonathan Ross, corps officer at The Salvation Army in Utica, NY, was at the Pier handing out balloons to children and their families.

We asked why he personally felt connected to the Old Orchard Beach Pier Ministry.

“For me, I love seeing the smiles on children’s faces as they get a balloon. But being here is really about all of us planting seeds. You never know what someone is going to hear when they walk by us. Our message is simple, but none of us know how it will sprout in someone’s life. Maybe someone who is lost and in need of hope will hear us, and it might help them find their way.”

🎡 Humans of OOB Highlight! Lieutenant Darner Montilla, Youth Officer at The Salvation Army of Greater New York, came to the Pier ready to share the Word of God.

We asked him why John 5:24 is the verse he brought with him to OOB.

“It’s my life story. I’m only here because of my faith in Jesus. He has saved me from depression and brought me back from the lowest points of my life. I call Him my ‘Life Person’, and I want to share that with everyone. I’m a living testimony for Him, because I believed in His message, and through it, I was completely transformed.”

🎡 We're back with more Humans of OOB! Captain Bersabe Vera-Hernandez is the divisional commander of The Salvation Army Puerto Rico & Virgin Islands Division.

We asked her how it felt to attend her first Old Orchard Beach Pier Ministry.

“My passion is outdoor evangelism, meeting and talking one on one with people who may not know about The Salvation Army or the love of Christ. That’s where I’m in my zone and I feel the happiest, or as they say in Mexico, ‘estoy en mi mero mole’. I love the whole concept of this Pier celebration. I want to take back what I saw here in Old Orchard Beach to Puerto Rico and share how powerful this type of ministry is. My hope is that all Salvationists have that same drive to evangelize and interact with others as the ones here do."
