6 Things To Know About Medicare EnrollmentThere is a lot to know about Medicare. Even the basics can seem a little overwhelming, especially when you’re first enrolling in Medicare or a Medicare plan. Whether you’re signing up at age 65 or switching plans during an enrollment period, here are six important things to know about enrolling into Medicare.
1: Medicare isn’t just for people who are 65 and older

Most people enroll in Medicare at or around the age of 65. However, you can also enroll if you are under age 65 and have certain disabilities, or if you have End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) — permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant. People under the age of 65 are eligible to enroll in Medicare if they have received Social Security Disability Insurance or Railroad Retirement Board disability benefits for at least 24 months. There is no 24-month waiting period for those who have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Some people with ESRD are also eligible to enroll immediately.

2: Medicare is different from other types of health insurance
If you’ve had health coverage through your employer, your plan likely included medical and prescription drug coverage, along with other benefits. It also may have covered both you and your spouse. Medicare covers only one person at a time. That means you and your spouse must enroll separately. In addition, Medicare gives you options that make it possible to receive your benefits in a variety of different ways. You have the freedom to choose coverage that fits your needs, budget, and lifestyle.

Palliative Care vs. HospiceNo one wants to think about it, but serious illnesses can happen to anyone. That’s why it’s so important to understand care options long before you ever need them. To help, we’re going to take a closer look at two care options for those with serious illnesses: palliative and hospice care. We’ll compare what they have in common and how they differ.

What is palliative care?

Palliative care gives specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness, such as cancer or heart failure. Palliative care focuses on improving quality of life for them and their families. Patients in palliative care may also receive medical care for their symptoms and treatments to help cure their serious illness.

What is hospice care?

Hospice care focuses on the care, comfort and quality of life of a person with a serious illness who is approaching the end of life. For many, there comes a point where treatment for a disease is no longer an option. Hospice is provided to people with terminal illnesses when their doctor believes they have six months or less to live and they have decided to let the disease run its course.

Medicare and Men’s Health: What You Need to KnowMedicare coverage is available to most Americans over age 65, but health concerns and lifestyle conditions can be quite different between genders. Certain illnesses, normal changes with aging and even likelihood of visiting a doctor can vary widely, with differences showing up with regularity along gender lines. We’ll be exploring a few questions in this article: Do men age differently than women, and how does this affect day-to-day health care?

Before we begin, it’s important to note that s*x and gender exist on spectrums. However, this article primarily looks at cisgender (cis) men and women and the data that exists on aging and Medicare coverage for those groups. Being transgender or elsewhere on the s*x/gender spectrum can affect life expectancy, overall health and experience of aging.

Next, we’ll take a look at how men age and at factors in their health, including Medicare’s role in supporting a vibrant life for decades!

Medicare and DiabetesDiabetes can be a frightening and expensive diagnosis. With testing materials, insulin, needles and additional doctor visits with specialists, it can seem daunting. That’s why we’re going to look at what Original Medicare coverage for diabetes looks like and what you can expect from different parts of Medicare.
Medicare Part A Diabetes Coverage

Part A coverage is for hospital stays, which can occur for diabetics if their blood sugar is unregulated. If you are diagnosed with diabetes after 65, you will probably need to be hospitalized for a day or two when first diagnosed to get your levels back to normal, receive diabetes education and counseling, and determine a course of action based on your health care needs.

Medicare Part B Diabetes Coverage

Medicare Part B offers coverage for doctor visits and medical screenings, which includes diabetes management. It will also cover diabetic supplies to help you manage your blood sugar, such as blood sugar testing strips.

Doctor visits

Part B covers a one-time “Welcome to Medicare” doctor visit to review your health when you first join Medicare. If you already have diabetes when you join Medicare, this visit will include an overview of what materials you use to manage your blood sugar and what type of insulin you use. If you are diagnosed after 65, you will likely need to schedule a doctor’s appointment with your primary care physician to establish a care plan after your diagnosis.

End-Stage Renal Disease and Medicare: What You Need to KnowMedicare coverage isn’t just for those age 65 and over. Some medical conditions can qualify you for Medicare, regardless your age. Similar to some benefits of Social Security, Medicare is available for people under 65 who have special life or health situations and who meet certain criteria.

End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is a medical diagnosis that makes Medicare coverage an option at any age, once certain criteria are met. Let’s get to know the basics of this health condition and what is important to know about receiving care and treatment using Medicare coverage.

Avoiding Medicare PenaltiesMedicare Late Enrollment Penalties sound scary, but the truth is that they are easily avoidable if you stay on top of your Medicare coverage. Today, we are going to look at what the penalties are and how you can ensure you aren’t hit with surprise fees that could potentially follow you for the rest of your life.

What are Medicare Late Enrollment Penalties?
Late Enrollment Penalties are fees that happen when you deny or delay your Medicare coverage. This is used to incentivize signing up for Medicare and making the most of this public service. There are different penalty rules for Part A and Part B plans.

Mental Health and MedicarePersonal mental health is something every person needs to take seriously — seniors especially. It can be difficult to ask yourself, “Am I depressed?” or, “Should I talk to someone about my mental health?” but these are important questions. Unfortunately, these questions are often followed by another one: “Does my insurance cover mental health services?”

Good news: Original Medicare covers basic inpatient and outpatient mental health services. Some costs — like depression screenings and other preventive mental health services — are even totally covered by Medicare. Nevertheless, it’s still important to know what’s covered, what’s not and how to fill the gaps in your insurance so you can get the mental health services you need.

What does Medicare cover?

Mental health coverage extends to both Medicare Part A and Part B, depending on where and how services are rendered. Here’s a breakdown of coverages across both parts.

Are You New to Medicare and Medicare Advantage?Seniors can experience a lot of changes as they approach their 65th birthday. One of these is becoming eligible for Medicare.
Medicare can be confusing for many older Americans — especially those used to receiving private health insurance through their employer. Moving to Medicare, including knowing when to sign up and which plan to sign up for, might seem like a challenge.

If you’re new to Medicare, there’s no need to stress! There are many resources available to help you navigate this transition and find the best healthcare coverage for you. Here’s an overview of the basics of Medicare to get you started.
Medicare is mandatory for people over the age of 65, except for in certain circumstances — and if you don’t enroll in Medicare when you’re first eligible, you may be subject to late enrollment penalties. These penalties can increase the cost of your monthly premiums and may be permanent! Plus, failing to enroll in Medicare right away could leave you with gaps in your healthcare coverage or without any health insurance at all. That’s why it’s important to start preparing for Medicare before your 65th birthday, so you can have the coverage you need when you need it. Click the link:

Pre-Existing Conditions and MedicarePre-existing conditions are a popular insurance concern. Most Americans have been diagnosed with a pre-existing condition by the time they reach Medicare age — it’s a byproduct of living through six-plus decades of wear and tear on our bodies. It’s only natural to be worried that you have pre-existing conditions that might cause problems with your Medicare choices. That’s why we’re going to look at what different Medicare options do about pre-existing conditions and how you can get the most out of your coverage.

What Is a Pre-Existing Condition?
A pre-existing condition is any health problem that you had prior to your enrollment in Medicare. Under federal law, Medicare cannot refuse coverage based solely on pre-existing conditions. If this were not the case, thousands of seniors would have coverage issues every year. What this means is that you most likely will not be denied coverage based on your pre-existing conditions. Certain Medicare Supplement plans may have some restrictions, but we’ll go into more detail on that later.
