Meenakshi Raghavan, an 82-year-old martial arts master known as "Sword Granny," is dedicated to empowering the next generation through the ancient Indian martial art of Kalaripayattu. Operating from her school in Kerala, Raghavan trains over 200 students, predominantly girls, in this traditional discipline, which she believes is crucial for self-defense in a society where crimes against women are rising. Despite her age, Raghavan's swift and graceful swordsmanship inspires her students, instilling in them physical prowess, mental resilience, and self-confidence. Her school, founded by her late husband in 1949, continues to offer free training to all, with a focus on equipping young women with essential self-defense skills. Caroline Thomas, an 81-year-old with a lifelong sense of adventure, has spent the past 40 years volunteering with the Casualties Union, a charity that simulates realistic emergency scenarios to help train first responders. Her journey began when she took a first-aid course in Cape Town and later volunteered with St John Ambulance in London. Intrigued by the idea of playing the role of a casualty in emergency drills, she quickly became involved in more advanced training exercises. Over the years, Caroline has simulated countless life-threatening injuries, from being shot and stabbed to being rescued from burning ships and car wrecks.

Despite the intensity of these drills, Caroline finds the work incredibly rewarding and believes it’s crucial for emergency services to train in realistic scenarios. Her dedication has made her a senior instructor, allowing her to pass on her experience to new recruits. Caroline's passion for her volunteer work keeps her feeling young, and she plans to continue her role well into her later years, preferring the thrill of training exercises over more traditional pastimes.

In September 2022, Right at Home Portland, ME, welcomed Katie Neuguth as one of their first employees, and she quickly became the embodiment of the Right at Home brand. With a strong background in Community Relations within assisted living, Katie's dedication to senior care was unparalleled. Her passion for making a difference led her to champion Parkinson’s awareness, inspired by Right at Home's involvement with the Parkinson’s Foundation Moving Day in Boston. Katie took the lead in bringing Moving Day to Maine, establishing the first event in Payson Park for June 1, 2024. She tirelessly built a committee, selected the location, and raised awareness throughout Maine’s senior care community.

Tragically, Katie passed away in March 2024, leaving Moving Day as her enduring legacy. The Right at Home Greater Portland team honored her by stepping into her role on the committee, ensuring the event's success, and surpassing fundraising goals. Moving Day now stands as a lasting tribute to Katie's unwavering dedication and impact. As we remember Katie, we extend our deepest gratitude for her caring heart and her tireless efforts to improve the lives of others.

At Right at Home, our core values are more than just words; they guide everything we do. That’s why we created the RAH-k Stars program, where colleagues recognize each other for living these values every day. At our bi-weekly staff meetings, we celebrate those who exemplify accountability, approachability, integrity, collaboration, and authenticity. All recognized employees are entered into a swag drawing, and some even get a shot at our annual $2,000 travel voucher.

We’re thrilled to announce that Molly Schroeder is this year's lucky winner! Congratulations, Molly, and thank you for being a shining example of our values!

I’d like to share with you my list of 13 New Year's Resolutions for Caregivers.

All family caregivers strive for perfection while caring for their aging loved ones and most of us feel we fall short. It is so easy to get wrapped up in the difficult feelings and the pressure that come with this role. Every so often, caregivers need to remind themselves that they are doing their personal best. The new year is a perfect time to take inventory of your life and see what improvements you can make.
I made the following list of New Year’s resolutions that I felt I could’ve used when I was an active family caregiver. However, some of the items on this list that address self-care and self-love are important for everyone, not just those who are providing care. Even if you only stick to one of these, remember that progress is good, no matter how small.
A Caregiver’s New Year’s Resolutions
1. I give myself permission to not keep the following resolutions or to keep them only partway.
2. When I feel I am imperfect, I will remember that guilt is not an option as long as I know I did the best I could, given the circumstances.
3. I will find time alone for myself, even though that seems impossible. That may mean asking for help from people and resources I’ve never considered before.
4. Regardless of how deserving the source, I will say no to requests for my time when I know I can’t add any more to my plate.
5. I will remember that family members and friends who are not care receivers deserve some of my time. This may mean a little less of my attention will go to my care receiver, and that is okay.
6. I will follow through with my own medical appointments and screenings, including dental cleanings and eye exams.
7. I will find a way to monitor my own energy levels so I can recharge my batteries before I hit the point of exhaustion and burnout.
8. I will remember that seeking advice from professionals, organizations and fellow caregivers is a sign of strength, not weakness.
9. I will remember that my care receiver didn’t choose the illness or disability that he or she is living with.
10. I will remember that I didn’t choose this life for my care receiver either, so I won’t be a martyr to their illness.
11. I will remember that taking care of my own needs isn’t selfish. Taking care of myself benefits everyone I love.
12. I will get appropriate help for myself if depression, anxiety or other mental health issues become apparent to me, my friends or my family.
13. I will be open to alternative ways of caring for myself. This can include massage, aroma therapy, some form of meditation, exercise, attending a caregiver support group, participating in an online caregiver forum, seeking out respite care, or meeting with a therapist.

Did you spend time with your family during this holiday season?

Spending time with your aging loved ones is a special and beautiful time but it can also be the time we notice how age-related decline can occur rapidly, and parents may conceal any problems since they don't want to be a burden and risk losing their independence.

Here are some initial warning signs that may indicate if they require assistance. • Behavioral changes- mood swings, memory loss, confusion, loss of appetite
• Lifestyle changes - clutter, unpaid bills, unexplained damage to car or home
• Mobility changes - coordination issues, change in gait, frailty.

Professional home care services can be there when you can't, ensuring that your loved one ages with dignity in the comfort of their home. If your loved one is a wartime Veteran or surviving spouse, they may be eligible for a benefit that can be used to help with home care.

Right at home is passionate about helping seniors age comfortably at home by providing them the support they need and also sharing as many resources as possible for their loved ones.

We are also here if they need to go shopping, help with daily household chores, or if their needs are more complicated such as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's, we are here to help in every way.

As the first week of the new year ends, we encourage everyone to welcome the upcoming year with kindness, love and positivity – not only towards others but also to yourself.

01/05/2024

Isn't this sweet? Sadly, it's a pretty uncommon holiday trip home.
Did you travel for the holidays? How was your travel?
I'll never forget my flight home after the first time I saw my mom declining. How was it possible?
Wonder Woman.
The Woman who showed more courage, strength, and fire than anyone I'd ever known, and suddenly she was a shell of her former self.
How did that happen so fast?
How didn't I notice sooner?
The same thing is happening to thousands of people around the country right now. It's hard to tell over FaceTime how our parents are really doing but when we see them in person, we know they need support.
Not everyone has the luxury to move their parents in with them or other family nearby and that's where we can help.
Right at Home is passionate about helping your loved ones in every way so they can stay right at home where they are comfortable and happy. There's no need to feel guilty or afraid for them, we have them safely in our hands as long as you need us.
Let's talk about how we can help.
