Boquete’s Geisha Coffee Sets Record at Private Auction: 13,518 Dollars per Kilogram – Newsroom Panama 21/09/2024

Panama Breaks A New Coffee Record! 🇵🇦

Panama’s luxury Geisha coffee set a new world record at a private auction on Thursday, when producers Lamastus Family Estate sold one of its lots for $13,518 per kilogram ($110.50 per cup), which was purchased by a South Korean company.

“This lot is small, but extremely delicious. A coffee that has a cup profile that I have not found anywhere else in the world. A coffee that was harvested ripe, with a Honey process, dried in a dark room and we obtained a result in that cup, extremely excellent,” says Wilford Lamastus, owner of Lamastus Family Estate; the same producer who imposed the highest price in the recent public electronic auction of the ‘Best of Panama (BOP)’.

Lamastus explained that the 3-kilogram batch of Aguacatillo Elida Geisha Honey, acquired by Korean company Black Road Coffee, was grown at an altitude of 2,060 meters in the town of Boquete, in the Panamanian province of Chiriquí, 500 kilometers from the capital of Panama.

Creatine Study 💪

Odd but interesting new study:

"Creatine Improves Total Sleep Duration Following Resistance Training Days versus Non-Resistance Training Days among Naturally Menstruating Females"

Nutrients 2024, 16(16), 2772; https://doi.org/10.3390/nu16162772

Abstract
Females historically experience sleep disturbances and overall poor sleep compared to males. Creatine has been proposed to impact sleep; however, the effects are not well known. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of creatine supplementation on sleep among naturally menstruating females. Twenty-one participants completed a double-blind, randomized controlled trial in which they consumed 5 g creatine + 5 g maltodextrin or placebo, 10 g maltodextrin, daily for 6 weeks. Participants completed resistance training 2x/week using the TONAL® (Tonal Systems Inc., San Francisco, CA, USA) at-home gym. Pre- and post-testing assessed body composition, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), dietary intake, and muscular strength. Sleep was assessed nightly using an ŌURA® (Oulu, Finland) ring. Compared to the placebo group, those consuming creatine experienced significant increases in total sleep on training days (p = 0.013). No significant changes in chronic sleep and PSQI (pre–post) were observed. There was a significant increase in TONAL® strength score over time (p < 0.001), with no between-group differences. Participants reduced their total calorie (kcal) (p = 0.039), protein (g/kg) (p = 0.009), carbohydrate (g/kg) (p = 0.023), and fat (g) (p = 0.036) intake over time. Creatine supplementation increases sleep duration on resistance training days in naturally menstruating females.

From cup to clock: exploring coffee's role in slowing down biological aging.

Abstract

Background: Previous research has proposed that coffee consumption may have potential health benefits, yet the effect of coffee on one's biological age has not been determined to date. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of coffee drinking on biological aging.

Methods: Participants were chosen from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and had to meet the selection criteria. Coffee consumption was evaluated through two 24-hour dietary questionnaires. Biological age was measured using both the PhenoAge and KDM-BA algorithms. Multiple linear and logistic regression models were adopted to analyze the association of coffee consumption with biological aging.

Results: A total of 13 384 participants with an average daily coffee consumption of 1.73 cups were included. Participants with higher coffee consumption tended to be older, male, non-Hispanic white; had a higher educational level beyond high school; were more likely to be married; had better financial status; and were less likely to smoke or engage in excessive drinking. These individuals with higher coffee consumption exhibited a younger biological age in relation to their chronological age, as indicated by lower mean advancements in PhenoAge and KDM-BA scores. Furthermore, coffee intake was found to be inversely related to PhenoAge and KDM-BA progressions, as well as to the chances of accelerated biological aging, both in unadjusted and adjusted models. These associations remained consistent across all age and gender groups. Additionally, some heterogeneity was also observed among body mass index and physical activity categories.

Conclusions: Coffee drinking was inversely related to biological age advancements and the likelihood of accelerated biological aging. Moderate coffee consumption may offer substantial benefits in reducing biological aging.

Boquete Panama - Geisha Coffee Breaks World Record in BOP Auction 11/08/2024

Coffee News 🇵🇦

Panama sets a record yet again for a KG of coffee!

"At the turn of the century, Kentucky born Robert Lamastus started an Arabica coffee plantation in a farm located at around 5,600 ft (1 700 m) above sea level in the skirts of the Baru Volcano in Boquete, Panama. At the time our grandfather processed and exported what is still today considered as one of the highest quality coffees in the world. Nowadays and three generations later the tradition continues, the Lamastus family, still produces, processes, exports, and now roast its own rare estate coffees. Panameño coffee conquers the world: A new chapter is written in the history of Panamanian coffee. The Elida Geisha Natural Torre lot from Lamastus Family Estate has reached an unprecedented price of $10,013.00 dollars per kilogram in the Best of Panama 2024 online auction, solidifying the country as the global benchmark in specialty coffee production. Exploring the relationship between creatine supplementation and renal function: insights from Mendelian randomization analysis 23/06/2024

Creatine Supplements And Kidneys 🧠💪

For the 9,192,152 time, creatine supplements do not negatively impact kidney function. Just published:

"Exploring the relationship between creatine supplementation and renal function: insights from Mendelian randomization analysis"

Abstract
Background

Creatine supplementation is ubiquitously consumed by fitness enthusiasts due to its perceived advantages in enhancing athletic performance. Although there is an increasing concern within this demographic regarding its possible impact on renal function, there is still a lack of rigorous scientific investigations into this alleged association.
Methods

Data were collected through an online survey on the participants’ demographics, creatine usage and concerns related to renal function. The reliability and validity of the survey were assessed using SPSS software. A total of 1129 participants responded to the survey, and chi-square tests were utilized for data analysis. To explore the potential association between creatine levels (as the exposure) and renal function (as the outcome), we utilized open-access genetic databases, and Mendelian randomization (MR) techniques were used to confirm this correlation.
Results

Chi-square analysis revealed no significant association between creatine usage and renal function among the participants. Our MR analysis further supported this finding, demonstrating no significant association between creatine levels and six indicators assessing renal function (IVW, all with p values exceeding 0.05). Similar p values were consistently observed across other MR methods, confirming the absence of a statistical correlation.
Conclusions

This MR study offers compelling evidence indicating that creatine levels are not statistically associated with renal function, suggesting the potential to alleviate concerns within the fitness community and emphasizing the significance of evidence-based decision-making when considering nutritional supplementation.

Dietary creatine is associated with lower serum neurofilament light chain levels 27/05/2024

More support for creatine as a neuro-protective:

"Dietary creatine is associated with lower serum neurofilament light chain levels"

Abstract
Low creatine availability may be linked to an elevated risk of neuronal damage, yet this association remains inadequately explored at the population level. Utilizing 2013–2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data, the current study found a negative correlation between dietary creatine intake and serum levels of neurofilament light chain (NfL; a biomarker for neuronal damage) in a cohort of 1912 individuals (52.2% females) aged 20–75 years. This inverse association persisted even after adjusting for other nutritional variables known to influence neuronal viability. The observed pattern, where increased dietary creatine intake was associated with reduced circulating NfL levels, suggests potential protective effects of creatine against neuronal injury.

Effects of Low Habitual Cocoa Intake on Blood Pressure and Bioactive Nitric Oxide 26/05/2024

Cocoa, BP, and NO 😉

More potential good news for regular users of AlphaJoeCoffee Booster:

"Effects of Low Habitual Cocoa Intake on Blood Pressure and Bioactive Nitric Oxide A Randomized Controlled Trial"

JAMA. 2007;298(1):49-60.

Context Regular intake of cocoa-containing foods is linked to lower cardiovascular mortality in observational studies. Short-term interventions of at most 2 weeks indicate that high doses of cocoa can improve endothelial function and reduce blood pressure (BP) due to the action of the cocoa polyphenols, but the clinical effect of low habitual cocoa intake on BP and the underlying BP-lowering mechanisms are unclear.

Objective To determine effects of low doses of polyphenol-rich dark chocolate on BP.

Design, Setting, and Participants Randomized, controlled, investigator-blinded, parallel-group trial involving 44 adults aged 56 through 73 years (24 women, 20 men) with untreated upper-range prehypertension or stage 1 hypertension without concomitant risk factors. The trial was conducted at a primary care clinic in Germany between January 2005 and December 2006.

Intervention Participants were randomly assigned to receive for 18 weeks either 6.3 g (30 kcal) per day of dark chocolate containing 30 mg of polyphenols or matching polyphenol-free white chocolate.

Main Outcome Measures Primary outcome measure was the change in BP after 18 weeks. Secondary outcome measures were changes in plasma markers of vasodilative nitric oxide (S-nitrosoglutathione) and oxidative stress (8-isoprostane), and bioavailability of cocoa polyphenols.

Results From baseline to 18 weeks, dark chocolate intake reduced mean (SD) systolic BP by −2.9 (1.6) mm Hg (P < .001) and diastolic BP by −1.9 (1.0) mm Hg (P < .001) without changes in body weight, plasma levels of lipids, glucose, and 8-isoprostane. Hypertension prevalence declined from 86% to 68%. The BP decrease was accompanied by a sustained increase of S-nitrosoglutathione by 0.23 (0.12) nmol/L (P < .001), and a dark chocolate dose resulted in the appearance of cocoa phenols in plasma. White chocolate intake caused no changes in BP or plasma biomarkers.

Conclusions Data in this relatively small sample of otherwise healthy individuals with above-optimal BP indicate that inclusion of small amounts of polyphenol-rich dark chocolate as part of a usual diet efficiently reduced BP and improved formation of vasodilative nitric oxide.

Single dose creatine improves cognitive performance and induces changes in cerebral high energy phosphates during sleep deprivation - Scientific Reports 15/05/2024

More Creatine Win! 😎🧠

What's interesting about this study is the fact it's a single dose.

"Single dose creatine improves cognitive performance and induces changes in cerebral high energy phosphates during sleep deprivation"

Scientific Reports volume 14, Article number: 4937 (2024)

Abstract

The inverse effects of creatine supplementation and sleep deprivation on high energy phosphates, neural creatine, and cognitive performances suggest that creatine is a suitable candidate for reducing the negative effects of sleep deprivation. With this, the main obstacle is the limited exogenous uptake by the central nervous system (CNS), making creatine only effective over a long-term diet of weeks. Thus far, only repeated dosing of creatine over weeks has been studied, yielding detectable changes in CNS levels. Based on the hypothesis that a high extracellular creatine availability and increased intracellular energy consumption will temporarily increase the central creatine uptake, subjects were orally administered a high single dose of creatinemonohydrate (0.35 g/kg) while performing cognitive tests during sleep deprivation. Two consecutive 31P-MRS scans, 1H-MRS, and cognitive tests were performed each at evening baseline, 3, 5.5, and 7.5 h after single dose creatine (0.35 g/kg) or placebo during sub-total 21 h sleep deprivation (SD). Our results show that creatine induces changes in PCr/Pi, ATP, tCr/tNAA, prevents a drop in pH level, and improves cognitive performance and processing speed. These outcomes suggest that a high single dose of creatine can partially reverse metabolic alterations and fatigue-related cognitive deterioration.

If Honey is "just sugar" why is it so damn good for you? 🤔

All: I have generally brushed off the claims of benefits of honey in the face of its fructose content, etc. However, I have read 7 studies recently that make it clear to me honey likely has some unique benefits on various targets of aging and health. As usual, more/larger studies are needed, yet I think it can’t be ignored at this point. I will likely add 1-2 t-spoons to my daily coffee + AlphaJoeCoffee for the potential added health benefits and pleasant taste. One of those studies mentioned:

Disturbances and dysregulation in cellular energetics is well established with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), benign myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), and related PVFS of known and unknown causes. Improvements in cellular energetics via creatine monohydrate (CM) also well established.

How valuable is CM specific to with CFS/ME/SEID and related PVFS still to be fully elucidated and the question that needs to be answered via clinical trials, but as CM appears to have a long list of potential benefits, is dirt cheap, and a decades of safety data, a “no brainer” to use in those with CFS/ME/SEID and related in my view. AlphaJoe Coffee Booster

By Will Brink: After over a decade of people following my coffee recipe to raves, I’m working on making it a reality to offer the main ingredients picked by me personally as a single product, in the right doses/ratios. For years people have been asking me to offer it as a single product, but I was focused on other projects and such.

This will be the first product of its kind I have ever offered directly – vs acting as a consultant and formulator for other companies – in my 30+ years in the biz.

Name wise, I decided to change the name from Bomb Proof Coffee (BPC) to AlphaJoe Coffee but everything on my Brinkzone.com website discussing BPC applies to AlphaJoe Coffee Booster & recipe, which takes your coffee to an 11!
