Greenwood, the Tulsa, Okla., community that came to be known as Black Wall Street, was torched by an angry white mob on May 31, 1921, killing more than 300 people and destroying dozens of black-owned businesses—hotels, stores, schools—there. Why?
Allegedly, a young black man harassed a young white woman in an elevator. Here, locally, Hallie Balbuena, a trained thespian who lives in West Palm Beach (WPB), wrote a stage play in 2017 on the matter--and it has sold out nearly every one of the 13 times it has come to a stage since. “Their story is our story,” she said, “that’s why I wrote the play: we need to understand and value our black lives—and not just when it comes to the police.” To learn more about her continuing project, watch one local media interview with her here,
