Brilliant, and so true….as I will always tell you, we are not separate parts, it’s alllll connected.

Let’s talk adaptability! As we are heading into (or have already started) this upcoming school year, we tend to get crazy busy. During the summer we may feel busy but it’s usually with activities we-hopefully-enjoy. As we head into the school year, I find in our family it becomes a busy time not only with activities but also just pure mental load…managing schedules, school lunches, fall sports and activities, work, wrapping up things like yard work before the flakes fly, etc. It can be a lot to manage at times.

How do you handle these times of increased demands? How do your kiddos manage the transitions? Do we have big emotions? Do we become impatient? Do we feel like we are running around like a chicken with our heads cut off? Do we take it all in stride? Maybe we feel like we thrive during this season. I for one, have a little bit of all these responses from time to time. I’m guessing many of you do as well.

My question is, when times get a bit crazy for you or your kids, do you have strategies built up to help navigate the choppier waters? Or do you put your own health and mental well-being on the back burner? Unfortunately, I see this all too often! It’s easy to do! It’s easy to put things off for a week or two and then all of a sudden months have gone by.

My goal for my family heading into a new school year-which literally feels like a new year-is to help them create and build adaptability in our nerve systems. So when the speed or intensity ratchets up for a moment, we are able to not only take it in stride, but also thrive. When our brains and nerve systems are energy efficient and operating at their optimally, our ships can remain much more calm and steady in active waters. One of our key ways of loving on our nerve systems, is consistently getting our spines checked of course! There is nothing like NetworkSpinal for helping keep us adaptable and operating at our best! This is a non-negotiable in our busy fall weeks filled with activities and transitions.

And also, honoring our rhythms and our bodies. During these times we also really need quality-and sometimes extra-sleep or nutrient dense food and extra hydration. It all stacks the decks in our favor!

I also hold this ideal for all of you as well! Please be sure to love on yourself so curveballs, which are inevitable in life, don’t completely derail you! And if that includes getting your spine checked at One Life Chiropractic, you know where to find me! 🌊 🛳️ 🤩💚

Healing is not linear…sometimes it’s like the world’s wildest rollercoaster of hills and valleys, loops and flat areas to coast and catch your breath.

After what has been a pretty smooth recovery, I have reached the muscle spasm phase of this journey. My body still healing, but also my gait very altered by the devices on my lower leg, the boot in particular. I had been feeling so great, that naturally-as we tend to do as humans-I did too much. I moved waaay too much. And now my core and every muscle in my pelvis is screaming at me. And not the kind of soreness where you worked out a little too hard but it hurts so good. Nope, this is a special kind of hell. Like the toddler that screams so much they stop breathing and there’s no consoling them til they just get it all out.

And to compound matters, because I am healing my knee and ankle, I cannot move in ways that one typically would in order to stretch of these muscles that have been over contracting.

I have had to be resourceful big time. I have had to dig deep to really put into use all those tools I am constantly teaching to others in practice. Extra water…✔️ More magnesium from food and supplements ✔️ Finding ways to lay comfortably so that the muscles on my healing side are elongated ✔️ Getting super creative in finding ways to stretch them a bit ✔️

My biggest helper of course…my breath and NetworkSpinal. And since we are facing an epic snowstorm ❄️☃️🌬️ that is definitely going to keep me housebound for the next several days…NetworkSpinal isn’t even an option. But the one thing I do have….my breath 💨 and a little experience with all the breathing techniques that are my companions to NS Care. And for that, I am really so grateful!

I am really quite miserable right now, and that’s ok! Life and healing-especially on social media- doesn’t have to be all 🌈 and 🦄 There may even come a time or two where I do ultimately turn to the medication the surgeon provided me to find relief in this phase. It is not my first strategy, but let’s be real, sometimes in the season, you just do need a little relief because then it actually allows me to rest, and that’s where the healing takes place.

And lest I forget the importance of rest, both just generally, but especially when going through a healing wave-and CLEARLY I forgot this lesson which is why I’m in this beautiful mess to begin with….I feel great, I don’t need to take so much time off, I’m ready to go back to work changing spines and lives! I’m ready to resume life, I’ve got this…The Universe is like “no no no, not so fast, here’s 2 feet of ❄️ to make sure you sit your butt down” So to all my fellow Minnesotans, my deepest apologies, I feel like I single-handedly summoned the snow goddesses to bless us with all their might so that I can once again remember this super valuable lesson. 😂

So wherever your healing journey takes you, remember, you are your own best healer, and I am here to help! And with a little luck, I will see you all in office again next week! ⭐️ ☮️ 💚

“How do you get your kids to eat that (usually veggies)?”

I probably get this question more than any others. While I will say, we did start young. Our kids have always eaten what we eat and I think that definitely helped lay an early foundation. But another trick I have… I put the salad/veggies on the table first, before dinner is even finished cooking. They will usually happily munch away while I finish cooking dinner. They are also most likely to try new veggies during these times.

The other “sneaky” trick I have is to lay all the salad ingredients out on a big plate or tray to give them “choices.” They think this is way fun and still usually get a good mix. Are my kids perfect? Do they eat everything put in front of them? HECK NO! They are kids after all (especially the spicy contrarian)

This time of year, especially, we love salads because it’s such an easy way to get lots of different vegetables in their diet. This is especially key because it helps lead to a more diverse microbiome. Did you know Americans have the LEAST diverse microbiome of any country in the world? Research is increasingly finding gut microbiome diversity (or lack thereof) is key to all our systems functioning optimally.

Still think, yeah right, that’s all fine and good but my kids won’t do that? Just start with one. One new or different veggie a week. Just expose them to it. They might eat it, they might not, but exposure is a great start. Take them to the Farmer’s market and let them pick out the veggie. Try to make it fun. Nobody is perfect, but if you don’t try, nothing will ever change!

☮️ ❤️ and make the most of this One Life! ❤️☮️🌈

You know the saying, “done is better than perfect?” That can be a real hard one for me at times. Like I didn’t want to post pics of the new space until all the stuff was put away and the decor complete. 6 months later and I still haven’t posted anything.

Because when life is crazy with kids and quarantines and who knows what else, 6 months can fly by in the blink of an eye! So yes, in this instance, done is better than perfect!

If I haven’t had the luxury of seeing you since Covid began, this is what I was up to when it all began. Moving my office to the back sunroom with a private entry! I happen to love it and you will too, I promise!

Did you pick a theme, a mantra, or a word for 2020?

My theme for this year is “discipline” and has many many layers. I find that when I am disciplined with my routine, life is just easier, I feel more energized, things tend to fall into place.

And I do not mean discipline just involving diet or exercise, but also being disciplined in creating time for myself, for getting my spine checked each week, for writing, centering and grounding. Being committed to and disciplined with regular date nights with my husband and my girlfriends. Or even just putting my phone down and playing with my kids.

One of my main tasks for January was returning to the yoga mat. Yoga has been a distant memory since my babies were born and I’ve missed it. I particularly love how it is not just for the body but also the mind. I am one Day 19 of the well-known Yoga with Adriene series on YouTube. I 💜💜💜 it! I love carving out that 15-30 minutes just for me each day! It is not always easy, sometimes it’s 10pm before I’m able to get to it. On those nights I’m tired and usually have to dig deep. But I do and have yet to regret it. That’s where the discipline grows. That’s where the magic is.

So what are your goals or intentions for this year?! I’d love to hear them!

And if it resonates with you, I invite you to try your own 30-day journey of Yoga with Adriene, she has several to choose from!
