After the first round of storms last night, I photographed the results in a series of retention ponds in a neighbourhood park. This scene reminded me of the swamps in Florida where baldcypress trees and mangroves grow.

Here's proof that red skies at morning often prompt us to take warning--the underside of a thunderstorm which I photographed at dawn some years ago in West Des Moines, IA USA.

Throwback Friday! I found this photo from my early days using a digital single-lens reflex camera and decided to have some fun with it. It's a pile of broken concrete slabs which were piled along a recreational trail in Windsor Heights, IA. I decided to apply a black-and-white fake infrared filter to the image and then di**le with the controls to take the scene out of this world--perhaps to a lifeless planet. I was inspired by photos in the old Life magazine along with artwork which I've seen at various galleries over the years.

I will be hosting a show of my photography at Zanzibar's Coffee Adventure, 2723 Ingersoll Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50312, USA beginning on the afternoon of July 20. at 1 pm. The show will run from July 20 to September 20. You are welcome to contact me if you're interested in purchasing my photos for decoration at my house.

Yesterday I returned to the Jordan Creek greenbelt in West Des Moines, IA USA. I ventured onto what looked like a mountain-biking trail and caught this scene. I imagine it as a minor buttress inside this majestic woodland cathedral.

I took this photo in Crossroads Park, West Des Moines, IA USA on a late winter day some years ago. The joy of the turquoise skies and the sparkling white snow had long faded; the scene was merely cold and bland. Spring would come--but when?

My latest creation--springtime in the woodland cathedral which runs along Jordan Creek in West Des Moines. The photo is inspired by Patience Strong's well-known poem, Woodland Cathedral:

Go into the woodland
if you seek peace of mind--
As this time when Nature's mood
is gentle, quiet and kind,
When soft winds fan the trembling leaves
about the cloistered glade--
And paths go winding deep into the green
and breathless shade.

Where nothing breaks the silence
of the warm and fragrant air--
But snatches of sweet melody . . .
and wings that rend and tear--
The stillness of the windless dells
where shallow brooklets flow--
And shadows fleck the water
as the sunbeams come and go.

An unseen Presence walks the woods,
a sense of holy things--
Haunts the dim Cathedral aisles;
and every bird that sings--
Is like some morning chorister,
and every breath of air--
Seems to bring the secret murmur
of a whispered prayer.

My latest creation--a blending of a snow-covered pedestrian walk signal control button and the melting of ice crystals on a window. I chose to use these images in order to depict the dreariness of the winter season just before spring arrives--or so the calendar reads.
