Today, let's learn about palatal expanders! An orthodontic expander is an appliance that gradually widens one's jaw and palate, allowing room for their adult teeth to grow in normally or to correct jaw misalignment. Every orthodontic expander is custom-made. Someone may need an expander if they have severe crowding, a crossbite, or impacted teeth.

Meet our doctors! Next up, Dr. Bernhardt! Dr. Bernhardt has been practicing orthodontics since 1998. In August 2007, she and Dr. Smith opened their own practice with two locations in the West Des Moines and Waukee areas. In addition to her private practice, she is the current Iowa Director to the Midwestern Society of Orthodontists. Dr. Bernhardt resides in Waukee with her husband, Jeff, and their three children, Shae, Regan and Dane. In her spare time, she enjoys watching her kids’ activities, reading, and spending time with friends.
