What are your New Years' plans? I'm planning on 1-2 new books in 2024, the new Son Gideas album is slowly being propagated, so I'll say a new album and perhaps one more in the works, client mixes (do YOU need a mix too?), and keeping up with friends and loved ones. Resolutions? "Don't be a dick." Pretty much the same one each year.

My few cents on the Waves Audio controversy:

First off, I am not sponsored by Waves Audio .

Any business can sell their products in any way that they choose. The goal of a business is profitability (maximized) and economic sustainability; not making consumers happy, unless those two things magically line up (they rarely do).

Waves Audio botched this roll out, if you can even call it a roll out - more like a force-feeding. They chose not to ease their customers in, get them used to the idea, transition them from owners to renters, or provide them any number of variations on that path (own, rent to own, rent on individual plugins, or subscribe based on number of plugins, etc.). This was/is something Soundwide / Plugin Alliance has handled masterfully. (In addition to, during the transition, giving their long term clients a permanent discount on their yearly subscription based on the number of plugins they had purchased, from their first purchase to their last.) They are also not winning any fans by their predictable carving up of their two subscription offerings to incentivize people to buy the top level one.

All that said, I do not go in for the Waves Audio bashing I see going on. I believe they make excellent tools, that deliver results for my clients easier than I could without them and I plan to continue to use them.

I have a choice to make as a consumer, and I know my choice is a little different than yours might be because I'm a pro and these are expenses I write off as a cost of doing business.

I believe the highly critical response to the Waves Audio subscription model will ultimately give them some pause. If they truly want to compete going forward, to my mind, the Soundwide / Plugin Alliance model is best in class.

I'm very open to hearing what you have to say around this, but please, as Fran Lebowitz says, "Think before you speak. Read before you think." I won't be participating in flame wars.

We understand that our move was sudden and disruptive, and did not sufficiently take into consideration your needs, wishes, and preferences. We are genuinely sorry for the distress it has caused.

After respectfully listening to your concerns, I want to share with you that we are bringing back the perpetual plugin license model, side-by-side with the new subscriptions. You will again be able to get plugins as perpetual licenses, just as before.

In addition, those of you who already own perpetual licenses will once again be able to update your plugins and receive a second license via the Waves Update Plan—again, just as before. This option, too, will be available alongside and independently of the subscription program.

We are currently putting all our efforts into making perpetual licenses available to you again, as quickly as possible. In the meantime, you can keep-up-date on this webpage, where we will post real-time updates as they are available.

I would like you to know that we are committed to you, our users. We listened to your feedback, and we will continue to listen to you. Waves is a company filled with users and creators, just like you, and we are all as passionate about the products as you are. With this in mind, we will strive to find the way to make things right by you, and hopefully regain your trust.
