We all have an inner voice, but sometimes it can be a harsh critic. Learning to be gentle with ourselves through self-talk is crucial for our mental well-being. It allows us to navigate challenges with compassion and fosters a sense of inner strength.
This doesn't mean giving ourselves a free pass. Rather, it's about holding ourselves accountable with kindness, like a friend offering guidance, not an enemy piling on blame.
And of course, if it was really easy to do we'd all be doing it already! Here's three ways to approach changing harsh self-talk:
1. Coach, Not Critic: Imagine your inner voice as a supportive coach, not a harsh critic. What advice would a kind and encouraging coach offer you in challenging situations?
2. Step Outside the Voice: Picture your inner critic as a separate character. This helps you detach from negativity and respond with reason and compassion. Talk back to the critic as you would a friend struggling with self-doubt.
3. Find Inner Strength: Think of someone you admire for their resilience and kindness (Geralt of Rivia based on my current Netflix!) How might they approach the situation you're facing? Channel their strength and understanding to reframe your self-talk.
