Finding our mythic ground We think we make them up, the myths, stories and dreams which so richly define the human imagination. But what if they have an existence that’s independent of us?

It's not JUST about creating a map; sometimes it's about our emplacement and interactions with the landscape in which we live. There are several beautiful old oak trees that I often commune with, located on Chumash land just steps from where I live. I always feel a sense of awe and gratitude at what they have seen and the lives which have unfolded underneath their branches. What places give you a sense of awe?

On The Mythic Imagination Network this week, we've been thinking about the features of our personal landscape that take on archetypal characteristics for us, and that we name. This is something I've always done; it's an act of belonging-making, and something of an act of imaginal co-creation.

So this is another of my special trees. A beautiful big old oak tree a mile down the lane from where our wee farm is. It has this wonderful little old being growing out of its trunk, and as soon as I saw it I named it the Tree Dragon. Cuddling up to the oak is an old elder bush, entwined with it. The Elder Tree Sisters. I have a conversation with them most days.
