Hegira Health is proud to partner with the Wayne State University School of Social Work on their Peers to Higher Education project. Hegira Health is working with the WSUSSW to enhance the behavioral health workforce by identifying interested Peer Specialist and creating a clear and supportive pathway for Peer Specialists (i.e., Peer Recovery Coaches, Peer Advocates, Recovery Support specialists, etc.) to earn a Bachelor of Social Work or Master of Social Work and to become licensed social workers. The purpose of Peers to Higher Education is to facilitate the movement of peers, who play a critical role in the recovery community, to higher-wage and higher-demand jobs through higher education. Hegira Health’s Crystal Ann Dussia joined Charlie Langton with FOX 2 Detroitto discuss the recent findings from The Trevor Project survey, including that 84% of LGBTQ+ youth surveyed say they have a mental health disorder and 39% have considered taking their own life. Crystal talked about the factors that lead to anxiety and depression, including the stress, stigma, fear and lack of support that many face. Thank you to the Dorsey School of Beauty Taylor, MI for coming to Hegira Health's Oakdale Recovery Center recently to give our clients haircuts and styles! Prioritizing self care and physical appearance during recovery can have a positive impact on self-confidence and self-esteem. One of the men shared that he felt so much younger and now feels ready to succeed in his recovery. Another woman shared that she had not gone for a haircut in two years, and this reminded her that she is worthy of taking care of herself. This month we celebrated , and the addition of another embedded Master’s-level clinician as a part of our partnership with 12 police departments in Western Wayne County providing Mobile Crisis Co-Response services for individuals experiencing behavioral health crises as well as First Responder Wellness for law enforcement officers. Hegira Health is delighted to welcome Sonia McCain to Team Hegira! Sonia joined the Redford Township Police Department through our partnership. Sonia holds a Bachelor and Master’s Degree in social work and has over 10 years of experience in the mental health field.

Hegira Health recently held our Annual Employee Recognition luncheon event at the Italian American Banquet and Conference Center in Livonia. Hosted by HHI Chief Human Resources Officer Todd Harrison, the event was enjoyed by 65 leaders, board members and honorees. Todd rolled out HHI's 2024 Employee Recognition Program, highlighting new and expanded categories, including employee of the month, volunteer/intern of the quarter and leader of the year. During the event we honored 2023 longevity awardees with 5 to 50 years, our most valued employees of each quarter, Shelley Osburn (1st), Tori Pore (2nd), Katina Haynes (3rd) and Jennifer Desrosier (4th). Katina Haynes, Coordinator of Turning Point Clubhouse, was honored as HHI's Most Valuable Employee of 2023. Congratulations to all Team Hegira members recognized!

The City of Westland - Administration Department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion hosted a compassionate leadership forum on May 13, 2024 at Westland City Hall titled, “Compassionate Leaders Improve Lives.” Hegira Health CEO Carol Zuniga was among seven community leaders honored with an "Improving Lives Award." The evening's events explored how compassionate leaders passionately promote individual opportunity, disability inclusion, multicultural belonging, and community wellbeing. Musical entertainment was provided by the Davis Sisters and Steven Thomas on saxophone. Speakers included Mayor Kevin Coleman, disability philanthropist Senator Osita B. Izunaso, Detroit News columnist Bankole Thompson, Livonia-Westland Chamber of Commerce board chair Dr. Van Nguyen, and biotechnology business expert Dr. Shruti Bagla.

Hegira Health hosted its second annual Breakfast for Champions: Breaking Barriers yesterday at The Henry Hotel in Dearborn. The program was specifically geared towards our law enforcement partners, and included a presentation on First Responder Mental Health, a more comprehensive look at the Co-Response Model, as well as a peer panel discussion on how to help individuals who are resistant to seeking services. The event was emceed by WDIV Local 4 / ClickOnDetroit Darnell Blackburn, a veteran law enforcement officer with more than 27 years of experience here in Michigan.

Hegira partners with 12 police departments in Western Wayne County providing Mobile Crisis Co-Response and First Responder Wellness services for individuals experiencing behavioral health crises. Our partners include the police departments in Dearborn Police Department, Inkster Police Department, Garden City Police Department, Livonia Police Department, City of Northville, Northville Twp, Plymouth Police Department, Redford Township Police Department, Romulus Police Department, Van Buren Police Department, Westland Police Community Partnership and the City of Wayne, Michigan Police Department. Embedded Master’s-level clinicians are housed within nine respective police department and are available for co-response crisis intervention, as well as to provide follow-up for individuals and coordinate them with ongoing services to avoid future crises.

Hegira Health and the Downriver Council for the Arts “Self-Esteem Exhibit” launches today! 🎨 A partnership between HHI and DCA to bring the importance of mental health awareness to our kids and their families through art, the “Self-Esteem Exhibit” focuses on art pieces created by middle and high school students based on their own beliefs and opinions they have about themselves. It runs through May 18 at the DCA in Wyandotte, with a closing ceremony and reception planned for May 16 from 5-8pm. The reception and exhibit are open to the public at no charge.
