My good friend Craig Welkenbach passed away yesterday morning. Craig has been with the City for over 30 years, started running the Community Media Department in 2000, and before that worked at Continental Cable when the City first developed our Cable Department. His dedication to the City was unquestionable, he spent long hours and weekends making sure our programming and media communications were first rate and as a result received several National Awards for our programming. Craig greeted everyone with his warm smile, making you feel comfortable and important even if it was the first time meeting him. Craig’s long battle with cancer is over, I will miss him immensely, but my memories of all of the great times with Craig will not be forgotten.

It's been my honor to serve the residents of the City on the Westland City Council for the past 23 years. Today I will resign from City Council to become part of Mayor Coleman's Administrative team as Deputy Mayor. I look forward to working with the Mayor and all of our talented Directors to provide quality services to all Westland residents and businesses. Tuesday evening my wife and I had the unfortunate experience of watching the interim Mayor verbally assault a Sterling Heights Councilman at the Michigan Municipal League Annual Convention. The Councilman had stopped by our table at the restaurant to say hi and then proceeded to go up to the bar to order a beverage. Before he could even place his order Mike Londeau who was seated at the bar several seats away from where the Councilman was trying to place his order, yelled at the him calling him a "F**king Scumbag " several times and added a few "your a F**king do*****ag " before saying he would kick his ass and make sure he would not win any other elections. Several Council members and Mayors from other communities witnessed this spectacle and talked to me privately about it during the convention. This behavior is unacceptable at any time but particularly at an event where the City was trying to win the Community Excellence Award. Westland deserves better.

I guess even Fantasy Football is not exempt from politics!. Minutes after my announcement came out supporting Kevin Coleman for Mayor I was kicked out of the Fantasy Football League that I have been a part of since it began years ago. Childish and immature but I'm not surprised.

Westland needs and deserves responsible leadership, that's why I'm endorsing Kevin Coleman for Mayor. I have served with both Kevin and our interim Mayor on our City Council, and Kevin as demonstrated the focus, intensity and vision that it takes to run the City of Westland. When serving on the City Council, Kevin was always prepared and not afraid to speak out when our residents concerns were being ignored. As our State Representative, Kevin has delivered millions of dollars of State funding to the City and the to the Wayne Westland Community School District. Westland needs a Mayor focused on improving services for all residents, not spending or allocating millions of dollars on "free" services in order to garner votes as our interim Mayor has done. Please join me in supporting and voting for Kevin Coleman for Westland Mayor on November 7th.

The Westland Community Foundation's Christmas in July event scheduled for tonight has been postponed due to loss of power at the Hellenic Cultural Center. The event has been rescheduled to next Wednesday August 2nd.
