Statement by the American Federation of Ramallah Palestine: Latest hate crime in Vermont

Westland, Mich. – (Nov. 29, 2023) – Last weekend’s shooting of three Palestinian American college students in Burlington, Vermont, is the latest example of racism and violence aimed at Arabs and Muslims across the U.S., since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on Oct. 7.

While the Biden Administration announced a strategy to counter anti-Arab hate and Islamophobia in the U.S. earlier this month, many people within these communities, who are experiencing rampant fear and anxiety, believe the White House helped create the conditions since the outset of the war.

The American Federation of Ramallah Palestine condemns any act of violence, bigotry and hatred, particularly those based on a victim’s identity. We call on law enforcement in Vermont to investigate this shooting as a hate crime. Furthermore, we condemn the ever-increasing loss of innocent civilians in Gaza and we urge the Biden Administration to call for an immediate ceasefire.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their family during this challenging time. Join us in extending a helping hand to three young Palestinian men who were recently shot in Burlington, Vermont. Every contribution counts towards their recovery and well-being. Show your support by supporting the family's fundraising campaign:

Statement from the American Federation of Ramallah Palestine on the Censure of Representative Rashida Tlaib - American Federation of Ramallah, Palestine 11/10/2023

Statement from the American Federation of Ramallah Palestine on the censure of Representative Rashida Tlaib:

On November 7, the House of Representatives passed a resolution 234-188 censuring Representative Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian American in Congress. The American Federation of Ramallah, Palestine (AFRP) vehemently condemns the passage of the censure resolution against Representative Tlaib, and unequivocally stands with the Congresswoman as she uses her platform and voice to stand up for the humanity of the people of Palestine and call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

We are particularly appalled by the yes votes of 22 Democrats who claim to be defenders of free speech and human rights. While these Members have decided to formally rebuke the only Palestinian American in Congress for her principled stance in defense of Palestinian lives, they have failed to censure Republican members who have propagated dangerous and dehumanizing rhetoric denying Palestinians of their humanity and justifying the massacre of over 10,000 people in Gaza, including more than 4,300 children. This rhetoric has also had real-life deadly consequences here in the United States, including the murder of the 6-year-old Palestinian child Wadea Al-Fayoume in a suburb of Chicago last month. His murder is a direct result of the rise in anti-Palestinian and Islamophobic rhetoric among our elected officials and mainstream media. Members of Congress who voted yes have made it clear that they believe Palestinian lives are inherently less valuable than the lives of Jewish Israelis, both here and abroad.

The passage of the censure resolution against Representative Tlaib is a stain on the history of the United States and Congress. In the years to come, students of history will recognize the Congresswoman’s censure as a badge of honor for her bravery and commitment to standing up for what is right in the face of her colleagues’ overwhelming attempts to silence her and complicity in Israel’s grave crimes against humanity in Gaza.

The AFRP joins the Congresswoman and a rising chorus of voices in calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an end to U.S. military aid and weapons to Israel. Just as Rep. Tlaib, we remain steadfast in our demands despite all attempts to discredit and vilify our community and allies. We thank the Congresswoman for her continued bravery and integrity.

Dear President Biden,

Like you, we are horrified by the loss of Israeli life and hostage-taking that occurred on October 7, 2023. We are also horrified by the ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Palestinian people taking place in Gaza today.

As the largest Antiochian Orthodox Christian community in Michigan with 5,000 members, whose families reside in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Genesee, and Kent counties, we urge you to act immediately to prevent further bloodshed of Palestinian and Israeli lives in Gaza, Israel, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. The genocide of innocent civilians from all communities – Muslim, Jewish and Christian – must stop with an immediate cease-fire. We also request the immediate and significant increase in humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, in accordance with President Biden’s direction.

Watching the destruction and loss of life that followed the heinous attack on Israeli civilians and the brutal occupation and siege laid upon the Palestinian people that came before it, and continues today, has been heart-wrenching for many in our community who fled war to find a safe-haven in Michigan.

Our community members have also lost more than a dozen loved ones in the bombing of St. Porphyrius in Gaza, one of the world’s oldest churches. Attacks against innocent civilians are in violation of our basic humanity and international law. They also challenge and diminish the moral standing of our great nation.

As a policy maker, we urge you to immediately:
Call for a ceasefire in Gaza to stop the ethnic cleansing and genocide of the innocent Palestinians living in Gaza and to protect Palestinians in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and Israel from attacks.
Call for the release of hostages and prisoners being held without charge, including Americans.
Provide immediate humanitarian assistance, including medical care, to the more than 2.2 million people living under siege in Gaza.
Demand all parties respect international law and work to de-escalate the violence so that a broader region-wide war does not occur.
Use your public platform to condemn violence against all civilians—Palestinians and Israelis alike—and do not engage in rhetoric that dehumanizes entire groups of people, putting them and those who advocate for their basic human rights at risk of intimidation, hate, and possible violence.
The United States has the power, right now, to stem the devastating loss of life we are seeing in Gaza. The 16-year Israeli siege has tightened leaving millions without food as they face an onslaught of horrific missile and ground attacks. About half of the 8,000 civilians who have been killed under Israeli airstrikes are children and other innocent civilians. The denial of food, water, shelter, fuel, and hospitals is evidence of genocidal intent under international law and an indelible stain on our government. The numbers of children being killed, maimed, and orphaned are tragically growing each day.

We ask for your leadership and to stop this genocide with an immediate ceasefire and to restore humanitarian aid in a significant way immediately.

Respectfully,

The V. Reverend Father George Shalhoub
Pastor

Mr. Robert Hanania, Esq.
Parish Council President

A message from the AFRP President:

It’s a sad time for Palestinians. Our brothers and sisters are under attack like never before. Civilians in Gaza and in the West Bank are being killed and injured as we speak, mainstream media’s reporting on the current situation in Palestine has been taken out of context. The military occupation and oppression of Palestinians has been in existence for 75 years, but the current events are portrayed as if history has just begun.

We must all stand up to support and defend our identity, culture, and heritage. It’s more important than ever.

Palestine needs your help now!

The AFRP has initiated a Medical Mission campaign to raise money for the Palestinian healthcare system. Thanks to you, we’ve already raised close to $10,000! Our goal is to raise $250,000 over the next month for medical needs in Gaza and the West Bank. The funds will be held in trust by the AFRP and disbursed once we determine its best use.

We will report back to all donors on the details once the money is spent. We can’t on our own prevent the suffering, but we can help ease the pain.

A critical medical crisis is unfolding in Palestine, demanding immediate attention.

Recent developments in the last few days have resulted in thousands, including many children, women, and elderly being admitted to hospitals. We anticipate that the situation will deteriorate rapidly, with hospitals and health care facilities already operating at full capacity. Severe shortages of essential medical supplies are anticipated. The need is immense, and the AFRP medical mission is committed to supporting medical establishments to provide medical services to those in need to save lives.
