NovaCare Prosthetics & Orthotics is proud to be a sponsor at the 2024 Cairns Cup, a disability golf match play event happening this week.
Team USA is hosting Team Europe for the first time in the United States at Cherry Creek Golf Club in Shelby Township, MI. The Cairns Cup is a bi-annual event that rotates between Europe and The States, similar to the Ryder Cup. This year is also special as it marks the first time both teams are being led by female captains.
Market Manager and Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist Katy Schatzberg, Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist Jake Montoya and Director of Business Development Ryan Mento were paired up with Team Europe's Kjelle Gaude of Sweden in the Pro-Am charity match on July 29. The team shot a 69, good for three under par in the best-ball event.
Professional match play has begun and wraps up later this week. Best of luck to all of the golfers!
Sebastian Machado-Romero is a bodybuilder who faced a major setback after a car accident left him with a herniated disc in his back and partially torn bicep off the bone. He struggled with lifting, elbow range of motion and shoulder movement.
Sebastian came to our Delmar, DE center, where he met Physical Therapist Mary Harshman. Mary created a customized program with exercises to improve Sebastian's strength, mobility and flexibility. He thought he would need back surgery, but with Mary's help, he progressed to being pain-free and avoided surgery.
Now, Sebastian is back to lifting and on his way to returning to his old routine. Thanks for choosing us, Sebastian. We're thrilled to have helped you get back to doing what you love!

Lainey is a dancer, soccer player and tee-ball player who loves playing with friends and family. Lainey walked on her tiptoes, never letting her heels touch the floor. While the toe walking did not bother her, her pediatrician said it could lead to issues, including surgery, if not corrected. First, her mother brought her to another provider but didn’t see any improvement. So she came to Physical Therapist Sabrina Di Tucci at our Clarks Summit center for help.
Sabrina had Lainey walk backward to help her achieve a normal walking pattern. Then, she had her run while executing proper heel strikes. They also used BlazePods to improve Lainey’s balance and help with direction changes. In the video, you can hear Lainey’s shoes squeaking. Sabrina recommended these shoes to encourage heel strikes, as the squeaking only happens when she steps correctly.
Lainey’s mom shared, “I would definitely recommend NovaCare to others. In fact, I already have. Our child loves her therapist and looks forward to her PT sessions. Each and every therapist at NovaCare knows our child and makes her feel special.”
Lainey is making remarkable progress, and we are excited to witness her continued growth. We can’t wait to see where she will go from here.

In honor of Disability Pride Month, join us in celebrating Brooke Fletcher. Brooke has an infectiously positive attitude and always enjoyed helping others as an EMT, former National Guardswoman and waitress. She maintains that attitude despite what she endured in February 2023.
"When I woke up from a coma and saw the shape my arms and legs were in, I knew I would need amputations," Brooke said. After an implant became infected, Brooke went into sepsis and organ failure. She was steps from death. "I was put on lots of medications that saved my life but led to the death of the tissue in my arms and legs," Brooke recalled.
Doctors had to amputate below her left knee, her left hand, part of her right foot and several fingers on her right hand. "I knew that I would have to have amputations, but I also know that people can live their lives with prosthetics," she said. "This really isn't the worst thing that has happened to me in life, so I knew I could handle it."
NovaCare Prosthetics & Orthotics Market Manager and Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist Katy Schatzberg first met Brooke at the hospital. "I knew after my first interaction that I was in great hands, and I was very confident about everything that I had ahead of me," Brooke said. "Katy has become like a part of the family. She's not just the leg lady; she's a friend, and she actually cares about how I'm doing."
Katy worked with Brooke at our Southfield center. Katy explained the recovery process and encouraged Brooke along the way, adjusting her prosthetics as needed.
Now, Brooke is back to doing all the things she loves. "I can drive, I can play with my dogs," she said. "I can go up and down stairs. I can do my makeup. I can do everything that I was able to do before I had the amputations."
We're in awe of your perseverance and positivity, Brooke. Thank you for choosing us for your care.

Lori Schwichtenberg is a fighter. Her original cancer diagnosis of breast cancer ended up becoming something more. It became metastatic and moved to her bone. She needed a rod surgically placed in her left femur.
After some in-home therapy, her physicians referred Lori to physical therapy for care. ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation Physical Therapist Scott Kramer completed her initial evaluation and created a custom program to get Lori moving without crutches.
"I am still active in treatments," she said. "Scott is so great at tailoring our frequency of visits to what works for me."
While working on strengthening and mobility, Scott used different exercises to challenge Lori each session and boost her confidence. She also worked hard on her at-home exercise program to return to hiking, camping and walking her dogs without assistance.
"He pushed me to feel confident in walking unassisted and really helped me to get where I am now," she said. "Just this week, I was able to walk my two Aussie dogs solo."
Lori, you continue to inspire us with your strength and perseverance. We are so pleased to hear you left those crutches behind and are beginning to meet your physical therapy goals. Keep fighting, and thank you for choosing us on your rehabilitation journey.
An open letter to WNBA star Cameron Brink as she faces recovery from a torn ACL:
Dear Cameron,
On behalf of everyone who works day in and day out to help athletes overcome injuries, we wanted to share this message with you:

Meet the Kahn family from Dundalk, Maryland. We recently had the pleasure of treating all three - Khurshid Khan for low back pain, Shameem "Mimi" Khan for hip and shoulder pain and Theresa Khan for strength training. The trio was determined to get back in shape for their upcoming two-week family vacation in Florida. With the expert guidance of Physical Therapist Whitney Nigrin, we helped them achieve their goal.
Mimi shared, "I love to dance, walk and exercise. I wasn't able to do that until I came here for PT. Now, I can dance and walk without pain, and my shoulder is improving with each visit. Thanks to the best care team."
We're thrilled to have supported the Khan family on this journey to recovery. We hope they enjoy their well-deserved vacation!
Research Chemist Brian Calderwood had extensive radiation treatment for melanoma tumors on the left side of his chest wall. While necessary to treat his cancer, the unfortunate side effect was a burn that turned into a wound, which limited the use of his left arm. Brian could not do his woodworking, golf or play with his grandchildren like he used to. Thus, Brian sought to get back to doing what he loves.
Having experienced cancer herself, Physical Therapist Amy Saye conducted Brian's assessment and devised a ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation treatment program with both clinical expertise and empathy for Brian's experience. Amy began working with him to help him to reduce pain and regain shoulder mobility and strength. Brian has been working diligently, both in-center and at home, to reach his physical therapy goals.
"Amy has been fantastic to work with and does a good job of explaining why she has me do various stretches," he said. "The fact the she has been open about her experiences with cancer made me more comfortable."
Brian knew he was on the right track with his small victories. He could reach above his head to get something off the top shelf in the kitchen. He managed tasks at work without asking co-workers for assistance. His oncologist was so impressed with his progress that Brian was released to swing a golf club again.
"I feel great right now," he said. "I feel like I have been given an enormous gift - my shoulder back!"
We are pleased to hear that you are back to doing many things you enjoyed before radiation, Brian. Thank you for choosing us on your rehabilitation journey.
