I reworked the portrait of my mom. I wasn’t quite happy with her face. I wanted more depth and details.

I am so glad I did. It was recently accepted into the “Faces and Figures” show.

In portrait painting getting a likeness is only half the battle.

I've been learning that subtleties in facial expressions, body language and gesture can make all the difference.

For this painting of my dad, we did a photoshoot in his office and I did multiple sketches in various positions.

Once he started to relax his hands fell naturally into this position that was so familiar to me...an unconscious signature...confident, open, gentle.

We all probably talk with our hands but what do our hands and gestures say about us? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
