Fish Creeking Planning | Montana FWP 10/13/2023

Fish Creek State Park, previously owned by Plum Creek Timber, is located 40 miles west of Missoula on I-90. Traditionally this land has been open to public and OHV use on the many miles of logging roads.

As many of you are aware, Fish, Wildlife and Parks has been seeking comments for the scoping process for Fish Creek State Park to develop a recreation Draft Proposal. There are approximately 1000 miles of logging roads currently closed to motorized use in the Fish Creek area. Capital Trail Vehicle Association, working with several other OHV clubs in the region have developed an OHV Alternative map for the Fish Creek area. The OHV Alternative Map that was submitted to FWP is a detailed map that consists of approximately 155 miles of OHV routes utilizing the existing logging routes.

This proposed family-friendly trail system would only require some closed gates to be opened and a few short connectors to link the existing routes to form trail loops.

The OHV Alternative map submitted to FWP for consideration is supported by a large coalition of OHV organizations, Capital Trail Vehicle Association, Citizens for Balanced Use, Montana Trail Vehicle Riders Association, Scenic Montana Trails, Western Montana Trail Riders, and West End ATV Association.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks released the Draft to the public on September 19th. Unfortunately, this decision only allows for motorized use on approximately 40 miles of roads already open to any licensed vehicle. The Draft fails to acknowledge our unique OHV coalition or the OHV Alternative map proposal submitted by the OHV groups. The only OHV organization mentioned by FWP was the Missoula club, Western Montana Trail Riders (WMTR). While FWP reassured WMTR that their proposed OHV routes would be "reflected" in the Draft, they were not. The WMTR attended all the public meetings, provided input on behalf of local OHV enthusiasts, and fully support the OHV Alternative map proposed by our coalition.

The FWP Draft proposal for Fish Creek is open for public comment through October 20th. This is a rare opportunity to affect OHV recreation of our State lands. Let YOUR voice be heard!
