I want to address some concerns that we are getting over the purchase of a Suburban for use with student transportation. We have several small groups that travel for competitive events: Academic teams, Robotics teams, All District Band, Speech, Golf, Dance, etc. We wanted to look at a way to make travel more economical for these groups, while maintaining safety as a priority. Diesel vehicles are recommended over gas when transporting students for safety. We first considered 15 passenger vans and found that state law prohibited them. Then we looked at other options and found that a 12-passenger van was top heavy and prone to rollovers, and our insurance would not cover them. That left us with 9 passenger options or smaller. When researching diesel vehicles that size, we found Suburbans or a Mercedes Sprinter van. The Suburban was the best option. As a school district, we can purchase from the state price list and were able to purchase it for $67,000. The smallest bus we can purchase is 34 passengers and costs approximately $112,000. We will have a safety course in place for drivers and it will be available and follow the same procedures we use for buses and bus drivers, without the requirement of a CDL. Our only goal was to have a more economical and flexible option for our students. We serve the best and brightest students in the state and only want them to have every opportunity available to them.
Sincerely,
Denise Yonts, Superintendent
