Providing admission-free live classical music concerts for over 80 years in Southern California.

Beloved community member, artist, World War II veteran and supporter of the Arts, Yosh Nakamura, is being honored by the Whittier Regional Symphony this Sunday, January 21st, 2024 with a reception and concert, "A Highland Frolic," conducted by Kimo Furumoto.

There will be a pre-concert reception at 12:45 p.m., at the Whittier High School Library, followed by a concert at 3 p.m. in the Whittier High School (Vic Lopez) Auditorium, 12418 Philadelphia St., Whittier, CA. 90601 which is close to the library.

There will also be a "Kid's Corner" at 2:30 p.m. in the foyer of the auditorium for children and those young of heart.

All events are free and open to the public.

Anais Feller, Young Artist Competition Winner, will be featured in violin. The concert repertoire includes Hebrides Overture by Felix Mendelssohn, Symphony No. 3 "Scottish" by Felix Mendelssohn and Violin Concerto in D Major by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Mr. Nakamura taught art at Whittier High School, where he was inducted into their "Hall of Fame." He also was an administrator at Rio Hondo Community College. He is also a successful artist, having just completed a one-man show at the Whittier Art Gallery.

He is a World War II veteran, a member of the famous 442nd Regimental Combat Team, having fought in Italy and France in the U.S. Army. He climbed up Mount Folgorito in Italy in total darkness to surprise the Germans and help break the Gothic Line. He earned the Bronze Star, Presidential Unit citation with oak leaf cluster, combat infantryman's badge, European African Middle Eastern ribbon with three battle stars, the French Legion of Honor medal, and the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to his entire 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the Military Intelligence Service members that were Japanese Americans.

He shares a special bond with the Whittier Regional Symphony conductor, Kimo Furumoto, whose late father Howard Furumoto was a member of "Merrill's Marauders" in Burma during World War II.

Although Mr. Nakamura was incarcerated at a camp in Gila River, Arizona for people of Japanese descent even though he was a U.S. Citizen, he wanted to fight for the U.S. to prove his loyalty.

He was also involved with the Hillcrest Festival of Fine Arts at the Hillcrest Congregational Church in Hacienda Heights for many years.

Nakamura serves as an ambassador for the Go for Broke National Education Center to tell the story of the Nisei veterans to younger generations.
