Fiber is your friend! 🍎 The importance of fiber is key in managing prediabetes and type 2. Fiber has qualities that help to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Its qualities and positive effects are that it can lower cholesterol, stabilize glucose levels, assist in managing weight, regulate immune function, fight inflammation, and more.

Foods high in fiber, like apples, oats, and beans, slow down sugar absorption and improve blood sugar control. The current dietary guidelines for Americans suggest that people get 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories in their daily diet. Aim for at least 25-30g of fiber daily. Below is a simple breakfast recipe for quinoa oatmeal. Adding quinoa to oatmeal boosts the fiber and protein in this classic breakfast dish. Make a big batch of this oatmeal and freeze it in single-serving portions for a quick weekday breakfast. All you have to do is heat it up in the microwave to enjoy your delicious meal.

15 min cook time

4 servings--2/3 cup oatmeal, 2 tbsp raspberries, and 1 tbsp almond

Ingredients:

skim milk 2 cup

water 1/2 cup

old-fashioned rolled oats 3/4 cup

quinoa 1/4 cup

honey 2 tsp

ground cinnamon 1 tsp

vanilla extract 1/2 tsp

salt 1/8 tsp

raspberries 1/2 cup

sliced almonds (toasted) 1/4 cup

Step-By-Step Instructions:
Combine the milk and water in a large saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
Add the oats, quinoa, honey, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt. Reduce the heat to low. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until the oats and quinoa are tender, about 15 minutes. Serve topped with the raspberries and almonds.

Enjoy every bite! 🍽️ Mindful eating helps you listen to your body and avoid overeating. Start with smaller portions and eat slowly to better manage your blood sugar levels. To help with portion control, try using a small plate. Start with a nine-inch plate and fill half with non-starchy veggies, one-quarter with lean proteins, and one-quarter with quality carbs like starchy vegetables, fruits, whole grains, or low-fat dairy.

Below are graphics from the CDC to help you with portion control. The plate is how to balance your meal, while the hand method helps estimate portion sizes.

#1--3 ounces of meat, fish, or poultry: palm of hand (no fingers)
#2--1 ounce of cheese or meat: thumb (tip to base)
#3--1 cup or 1 medium fruit: fist
#4--1–2 ounces of nuts or pretzels: cupped hand
#5--1 tablespoon: thumb tip (tip to 1st joint)
#6--1 teaspoon: fingertip (tip to 1st joint)

We tend to eat more when we are served more food. This is why when you go out to eat, it’s best to take part or even half of it to go. Measuring how much of the snack you’ll eat and then putting it away also helps you avoid overeating.

💤There are 4 different stages of sleep that we cycle through every night–transition period, light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep with awake periods usually after a REM cycle.

These stages are necessary for restoration and repair.

Memory consolidation and emotion memory processing occurs during sleep. Lack of sleep and stress impair your ability to make memories. The different stages of sleep are important for different types of memory

Additionally, the more variability there is in the sleep cycle, the more health problems, both physical and mental, we see. Fragmented sleep (multiple awakenings and shallow sleep) leads to feeling unrefreshed upon awakening.

Slow wave sleep is a natural anxiolytic therefore lack of deep sleep increases your risk for anxiety. In addition, loss of slow wave sleep (deep sleep) is the biggest sign of aging over all other factors. Decreases in slow wave sleep are associated with an increase risk of dementia and cognitive decline.

10 Practical Ways for Busy Moms to Embrace Mindfulness and Self-Care Daily. Remember, self-care is NOT selfish.

Morning rituals--set aside 5 minutes for yourself e.g. savor a cup of tea or coffee, or practice a brief meditation

Embrace short mindful breaks--use breathing exercises or pause to appreciate your surroundings

Prioritize sleep--Establish a bedtime routine that helps you unwind, such as reading a book, taking a warm bath, or practicing relaxation techniques, to ensure a restful night's sleep.

Delegate and ask for help--Delegate tasks to family members or consider hiring help with chores to free up time for self-care activities.

Activity and movement--brisk walk with the stroller, a quick yoga session, or even dancing with your kids; boosts mood and energy

Mindful eating--savor each bite; pay attention to hunger and fullness cues

Create boundaries--say no when necessary and prioritize activities that align with your well-being and values.

Unplug and disconnect--schedule specific times to unplug from technology for example, enjoying nature, pursuing a hobby, or simply having quality time with your loved ones

Practice gratitude--reflecting on the positives in your life; start a gratitude journal or take a moment each day to acknowledge at least 3 things you're thankful for. This fosters a positive mindset.

Be kind to yourself--be compassionate; self-care is a necessity; celebrate small victories and forgive yourself for any perceived shortcomings

Proper blood sugar regulation is essential for various bodily functions, including energy production, cell function, and overall health. Dehydration can disrupt this delicate balance and can have adverse effects on blood sugar levels.

The amount of water you have in your body impacts if your blood glucose levels are stable. Consistently high blood sugar levels can lead to insulin resistance and, eventually, type 2 diabetes. Your body’s role in regulating gets thrown off if you’re not hydrating yourself properly.

🚰Here are some tips to stay hydrated:

💧Drink plenty of water throughout the day, aiming for at least eight 8-ounce glasses daily.

➡️Carry a reusable water bottle with you to remind yourself to drink water regularly.

🍉🥒Consume water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables.

🥤Limit the intake of sugary and caffeinated beverages, as they can contribute to dehydration.

🚽Monitor the color of your urine – pale yellow indicates good hydration, while dark yellow suggests dehydration.

Insulin resistance is a metabolic condition that can happen when someone has diabetes. This often occurs before a diagnosis is made and is present when someone has prediabetes as well.

The body’s cells become less responsive to the hormone insulin, which then leads to elevated blood sugar levels. If you have chronic whole body inflammation, there’s a high chance you will experience resistance since they are connected. Chronic stress can also cause insulin resistance.

Prediabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels are elevated but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes often goes unnoticed, because it frequently has no symptoms.

🩸Always be sure to get checked when visiting the doctor. Having prediabetes significantly increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes if not treated. Lifestyle changes can reverse prediabetes and keep it from progressing into something worse. Make sure you keep up with a healthy lifestyle to prevent your condition getting worse.

💤Sleep is very important, however it becomes even more important after a diagnosis of diabetes.

Without adequate sleep, it gets harder to regulate things such as your blood sugar or appetite. It affects your hormones and makes them harder to control.

To ensure that these things are less likely to happen, getting enough sleep is crucial. 🛌

A healthy sleep pattern is 7 to 9 hours per night. Implementing a schedule that works for you to get enough sleep will help control your blood sugar and the side affects that come with it. Rest is needed to let your body heal. 😴
