🐝…

circa. 1903 ~ A Bee Tree Party
Folder: Airy Trails and Trees Melliferous

During the 1890's into the turn of the century, 'bee tree cutting picnics' or 'bee tree cutting parties' were 'all the rage'. Bee tree cutting picnics tended to be more popular in the Eastern states. Often, when a bee tree was discovered in the forest, the finder of the bee tree would publish an invite to the community in the local newspaper for others to attend a bee tree cutting picnic. Families, women and children would gather to watch from a distance, perhaps laughing at the antics of the men getting covered with honey and stung by bees during the process. The attendees would then have a picnic with butter on fresh bread with honey and beepollen (which they called bee bread). Years later, these gatherings affectionately became known as 'famous bee tree cutting picnics.'

circa. 1816 ~ Ringing the Bees when Swarming.

When your bees swarm, the first thing is to get the key and fire shovel, to ring them. Some of the country folks think, that if you don't ring your bees, you can't follow them, but, in my opinion, this is a mistaken notion;

Via. Historical Honeybee Articles - Beekeeping History

-I believe, that if you keep in sight of them, or can otherwise prove them to be yours, you may follow them, and demand them, the same as strayed cattle; yet I must confess that I am fond of the ringing of bees, for I always fancy that the more noise you make, the more it deadens their sound, and thereby causes them to settle much sooner and better;-also, I think if there were a swarm just hived, before a second swarm rose, that by your ringing, it would, in a great measure, prevent them from going together; -but, however, if there is no real good in ringing your bees, it is well known there is no harm, therefore I would say, ring, and give your neighbours notice of your swarm, and follow them.

Dandelions are one of our first sources of food! 🐝

Just a reminder to those in the Northern Hemisphere that Dandelions are a key source of early nectar to Pollinators, flowering normally begins in a few weeks time but we're already getting reports of Dandelions appearing across the hemisphere, so consider leaving a few plants to flower if you are mowing 🐝

Dandelion (genus Taraxacum) are flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, which consists of species commonly known as dandelions native to Eurasia and North America, but the two commonplace species in the wider world, T. officinale and T. erythrospermum, were also introduced from Europe and now propagate as wildflowers in those regions. Both species are edible in their entirety. The common name dandelion comes from French "dent-de-lion", meaning "lion's tooth". Like other members of the family Asteraceae, they have very small flowers collected together into a composite flower head. Each single flower in a head is called a floret. In part due to their abundance along with being a generalist species, dandelions are one of the most vital early spring nectar sources for a wide host of pollinators that themselves are critical to pollination of later flowering plants. Although they are appearing earlier, May-June is a peak blooming time critical for Pollinators.

Did you know?

Here are some interesting facts about the dandelion flower:

The dandelion is the only flower that represents the 3 celestial bodies of the sun, moon and stars. ☀️ 🌙 ⭐️. The yellow flower resembles the sun, the puff ball resembles the moon and the dispersing seeds resemble the stars.

The dandelion flower opens to greet the morning and closes in the evening to go to sleep. 😴

Every part of the dandelion is useful: root, leaves, flower. It can be used for food, medicine and dye for coloring.

Up until the 1800s people would pull grass out of their lawns to make room for dandelions and other useful “weeds” like chickweed, malva, and chamomile.

The name dandelion is taken from the French word “dent de lion” meaning lion’s tooth, referring to the coarsely-toothed leaves. 🦁

Dandelions have one of the longest flowering seasons of any plant.

Dandelion seeds are often transported away by a gust of wind and they travel like tiny parachutes. Seeds are often carried as many as 5 miles from their origin!

Animals such as birds, insects and butterflies consume nectar or seed of dandelion.🐦 🐛 🐜 🦋 🐝.

Dandelion flowers do not need to be pollinated to form seed.

Dandelion can be used in the production of wine and root beer. Root of dandelion can be used as a substitute for coffee. 🍷 🍺

Dandelions have sunk their roots deep into history. They were well known to ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, and have been used in Chinese traditional medicine for over a thousand years.

Dandelion is used in folk medicine to treat infections and liver disorders. Tea made of dandelion act as diuretic.

If you mow dandelions, they’ll grow shorter stalks to spite you.

Dandelions are, quite possibly, the most successful plants that exist, masters of survival worldwide. 💪

A not so fun fact: Every year countries spend millions on lawn pesticides to have uniform lawns of non-native grasses, and we use 30% of the country’s water supply to keep them green.
