Opportunity Academy
Welcome to Opportunity Academy (OA), a trauma-informed personalized learning school.
We strive to build healthy, positive relationships with our students, parents and staff while building a culture of respect for all and self-advocacy for our students.
Congratulations to our OA grads! We enjoyed celebrating you yesterday 🥳
Shannon Garton, a food service worker at Opportunity Academy, takes her role of preparing and serving meals to students to heart. Also in her heart, is a special place for each of the students she serves.
Ms. Shannon, as she’s called, buys students at OA decorative candy gift bags every Halloween, Christmas and Easter. She had the idea to start an Angel Tree at OA for the community students enrolled there at Christmastime.
“She got a tree and decorations and donated gifts to at least two of our students. She is very dedicated to her work and the students. She does her best to brighten their days and reminds them to eat their veggies! We truly appreciate all she does,” teacher aide Shana McGinnis said.
Staff at OA report that Ms. Shannon is “incredibly patient” with the students she serves, which includes a high number of at-risk students.
“In my class they're always grateful, and even though they're not the best at expressing appreciation, they always talk about how much they like Shannon and how kind she is,” teacher Laurie Behymer said.
We are thankful for Ms. Shannon’s service to OA and 373 in the ways she goes above and beyond for students and staff.
“Shannon decorates her food carts for every holiday, which I think is so nice! She also brings the kids and staff special treats for every holiday. She does this out of her own pocket and with the kindness of her heart,” teacher Amy Whitlock said.
Thanks Ms. Shannon! We are glad you’re here.

Kids dumped some cold water on Mr. Swalley! All in Fun!!
Today at Emberhope's Fall Bash Mr. Swalley took some for the kids.
OA teacher aide Shana McGinnis' cousin, Jacob Fournier, came by the school this week to give haircuts to students. Jacob is a professional barber and volunteers his talents to a group called Fades for Faith, which helps men in recovery with career opportunities through the confidence that comes with a fresh haircut. Thank you, Jacob!
