It has been such a Fun Week visiting with many Old Friends and Meeting New Ones.
After the Big Shows in Santa Fe, Native American Artists are on the Road heading to Shows like Haskel, that is happening this week, or the Exciting Cherokee Art Market coming up in October.
When you are in the path, as we are, they call or just stop by.
Today our Great Friends Joe & Angie Reano stopped to buy from us, Angie purchased a Wonderful Navajo Silver Bracelet, and to sell us some of their Fabulous Inlaid Jewelry.
Joe & Angie are regulars on the Main Square in Santa Fe during the August Indian Market, and have Awards Piled Up in their Beautiful & Warm Home.
On a Side Note they make a Chile that you will eat at least 2-Bowls of, so go hungry.
Along with them their Son Dave and his Beautiful Bride Denelle were doing the Haskel Show this weekend.
I have a picture of the Copper Bead that they add as a Hallmark. Very neat idea.
Vangie (Angie’s Sister) also came along… the Muscle Shell Necklace is one that she did. I cannot believe that I did not get a picture of her.
I also did not get a picture of Mary Chavez. Mary makes some incredible Dresses and Vests. Sounds as if Julie & I will be stopping by Santo Domingo for Measurements. Before or After Chile & Home Made Bread?
Here are some of the Necklaces that Julie bought today. Other pieces next week.
We have a lot of new Jewelry for you to choose from. Come in when you get the chance.

Every Day I wear a Storyteller Cuff on my left arm that is Silver with Gold Overlay (Not Shown).
Most days I also wear a Cuff on my Right Arm. At Times a Plain Silver Cuff, often a Turquoise Stone & Silver Cuff.
Many, like me, when working don’t necessarily want a Stone in the Cuff just in case you happen to bump it…You don’t want to crack the Stone.
But wearing a Cuff is Special and every moment of every day needs to be Special!
A Cuff, Balances You, it is like a Thumb and Blanket to a Child… it Allows you to “Breath”, and “Slow Down”.
Here are 8-Classic Cuffs, Four of these are wide, Four of these are narrow… all Classic!
Enjoy… but if you don’t have a Silver or Silver with Gold Overlay Cuff, maybe this is the weekend to come into Sandbar Trading and see if a Cuff won’t “Balance out Your Life”.
They make Great Stocking “Stuffers”….

Birds are on my mind today…
well actually Zia Pueblo Pottery Birds….
And one Vintage bird, that appears to me to be flying, on this small Bowl from San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico or as is now known as Ohkay Owingeh.
Birds are often used by many Cultures as designs on Pottery.
But I Love the Zia Birds, these remind me of the Roadrunner.
The Denver Art Museum in interviews with Artists agree, but the Artist also identified the symbol as a Parrot, Raptor, and a Swallow, as well as a few others.
I like the Roadrunner. I have seen other Bird Designs as well on Zia Pottery, and these are maybe other Birds.
There are other Designs on the other sides, like flowers, I was just looking at Birds today so did not take pictures of the other sides.
Birds we’re on my mind I guess because when I went out about daylight, very high in the sky was a large group of birds in formation flying south. We had a good wind early that helped to push the smoke south to us, as high and as a large group of birds, they might have decided to save energy and catch the wind behind them and head south.
There is more information below each picture.
These Bowls are available in the Gallery. If you need additional pictures just let me know.
It is a bit early but birds have sure been gathering together, maybe the migration planning committee.

While we were not “Officially Open” Yesterday, many know that we Answer our Phones, and if we are in the Gallery, the Doors are Open.
Dine’ (Navajo) Jewelry Artists Mary and Everett Teller were coming through Wichita.
They took the chance and called and Yes we were excited that they did!
We wanted to get a first hand look at their Amazing Creations.
Look at the Necklace that Julie “Tried On”, (Julie, it is for Sell… right??).
Mary names their amazing pieces. The piece that Julie has on is called “the Star Wars Necklace”…You would have to see it to understand.
The Cuff in the 4th Picture she calls Rain over the Grand Tetons. The top shows Rain Falling, the bottom is the Grand Teton Mountain Range.
Their son, Travis, made the Cuff in the last photo. Travis also had a Great Bolo that I did not get a picture of. Like his Mom & Dad, his work is worth Collecting.
We are excited to have Jewelry from this “New to Us Jewelry Artist Team” in the Gallery.
Come in to view the Selection that Julie pulled.

Of all things, I have had Fall or Autumn on my mind today.
It always seemed growing up in Southern New Mexico that Labor Day marked a transition from Summer.
I realize that it was warm today, some might have said that it was Hot.
But Mornings are cool, announcing a cooler time coming.
Customers in the Gallery have told us that many stores already have out Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Decorations.
It is hard for me to think about decorating for the Season. The Darkness of the Nights, and Short Daylight Hours is a Primary Reason for Decorating and Lights to drive out the Darkness.
Julie and I have had this Rare 4-Piece Polychrome Nativity by Lawrence Vargas out year around for probably 20-years.
We added this Wonderful Sheep done by Jemez Pueblo Artist Cheryl Fragua.
We have decided to downsize a bit, and will offer this 4-(now 5) piece Nativity for sale.
We had it out year around… it is a Special Set that can Brighten the Darkness and the Day.
The Perfect Candlesticks, to hold Dinner Candles to Push Back the Darkness are a Great Addition for the Winter.
Last Year, Julie and I would put on some Dinner Music and Light Candles for Dinner, every night. It made the time together so Special.
The Food tasted better, Dinner became an Event, The Candles flickered away the Darkness, The Time was for us.
What better Candle Holders than Candlesticks from the 1800’s, by the Premiere English Company, Wedgwood. Their History is Long.
This set of Rare Jasper Ware Candle Sticks will “Set” Your Table.
We are offering a Levander and Pearl Set. Inquire.
Julie reminds me “to Live in the Moment”… Summer has it’s time until Saturday September 23rd.
So enjoy every minute of every day of this Summer Season. Enjoy the Fruits of Summer.

I cannot believe that I don’t have a picture of my Friend Lyn Fox.
Lyn has had an amazing Pottery Gallery in Santa Fe for years. He especially has a Love for Vintage & Antique Pottery.
But as much as Pottery, Lyn has a Real Love for Hopi Katsina’s and the Great Souls that Carve them.
I was really Honored when Lyn “Gifted” me the New Book “The Great Tradition of Hopi Katsina Carvers 1880-Present” by the Renowned Katsina Expert Barry Walsh.
As I mentioned in a Post last week, when in Santa Fe in August, while I have always Appreciated the Art and Significance of the Meaning, I once again found a New Love for the Carvers and Katsina’s.
Arthur Yowytewa created this wonderful Hemis Kachina. A card was written to describe its meaning.
An unsigned Parrot Kachina. This Kachina and 19 others came to us out of a Northeastern Kansas Collection. The Collector had passed, and so any information that he might have had was lost.
Parrots are regularly carved by Hopi Carver’s.
The Kyarkatsina or Parrot Katsina came from the Centuries Old Trading with Cultures from Central America. Feathers and even Stuffed Parrots have been found by Archaeologists in Caves in the Southwest.
The Katsina with the Blue Mask and White Legging’s did have an Old Handwritten Note. This Katsina was described as a Female with the term “Cold Moisture”. (Snow??)
Any Form of Moisture is Welcome in the Southwest (or even Kansas right now).
And here are pictures of two other Katsina’s that I am studying this weekend.
If you are interested in learning more about this Wonderful Form of Learning Art, I would be happy to tell you which books that I have found helpful.
Happy Labor Day!

Artist Signatures do help sell things.
Buyers are interested in who created the piece that they are admiring. With Pottery, the Collector-Buyer may want pieces from a Family or something from a particular Artist.
Signatures on Paintings or Jewelry add value for both the Seller as well as the Buyer.
And so it seems that both Julie & I spend many hours each week researching signatures. Sometimes we are successful, sometimes the search continues.
At times it is not that we cannot read the signature, it is that we cannot find anything about the Artist.
And at times you have to be concerned about the signature being that of a well known Artist, and is it a “Fake”.
Here are some pieces that we have been Researching just this week alone.
Notes below each piece. Any help or comments are always welcome.
Knowing the Artist, helps you Enjoy your Art Purchase even more.

On August 11th as we headed out on a “Buying, Viewing, and Learning” Journey to Santa Fe, I had a number of Orders in My Pocket.
On the List was a Special Bolo that a Customer Wanted. Turquoise for some Jewelry Artists. A Zia Pendant with Bumblebee Jasper, the List had 12-Items that Customers Requested us to find for them.
On Our Personal List for the Gallery, besides Unique, Really Unique Jewelry, I had Pottery by Lucy Lewis and Maria Martinez on the list.
We were fairly successful on this Adventure!
My objective on the Maria Martinez’s (1884-1980) was at least one piece with each of her signatures.
I was successful, until the night before we left when the Maria & Julian Plate that I had, sold.
I had a Maria & Santana large Bowl in the Gallery, I have added another. I also picked up two Marie’s, and a Maria & Popovi, as well as a Maria Poveka.
Each Signature was used at a different time in her life.
I also added two pieces by her Son Adam and his wife and Maria’s Daughter-in-Law Santana.
And I found this little Jar signed Helen Gutierrez San Ildefonso. Helen lived from 1935-1993.
In this piece was a faded invoice from the Popovi Da Studio in San Ildefonso.
The Son of Marie & Julian Martinez, Popovi Da was an Amazing Artist and Businessman.
The Book sold from the Renowned Fenn Gallery in Santa Fe had many of the Signatures from these Iconic Artists.
We always have requests coming to us and so we are always looking.
Near the Top of Our List right now is a Sculpture by Allan Houser.
And on my list another Maria & Julian to replace the one that sold.
Enjoy this Wonderful Day!

Storyteller’s created by Dine’ (Navajo) Artist Cheyenne Jim (Diane Lynn) are Easy to Identify, Beautiful, and Collectible.
Here are two Vintage Storytellers by the acclaimed Artist. Both Unique.

It was such a Fun & Busy Week!
An Old Customer & Friend has taken up a Hobby of Creating Animals with License Plates.
So here is a Rainbow Trout with New Mexico License Plates, some Vintage, I noticed a 1946-plate.
This is Cool, of course my Sales Mentality kicked in and I thought of how many places, including Man Caves that could use a piece like this.
15-Years ago I would have purchased this and ordered another 100 and “hit the road” selling.
But today, “No”…. I did not buy it “This Time”….
Do you Want to make your Million Dollars, contact me and I will put you two together.
The Multiple-Talented Artist Woodrow (Woody) Wilson Crumbo, Potawatomi 1912-1989, never hesitated to “Seize the Moment”.
If it was recognition for his Flute, Dancing, or Paintings he was a Force.
His Pieces reside in Museums and in Private Collections.
We have Two of Woody Crumbo’s Silk Screens available.

Some of the Things that We picked up at the Shows last week.
Jewelry is still to come. Julie is working through it.
Pottery was high on my list of things. I was specifically looking for Pottery by the Master Potter Maria Martinez and her family.
Maria worked by herself, her husband Julian, Daughter-in-Law Santana, and Grandson Popovi. She also signed for a period
Maria Poveka (Water Lilly).
I was fortunate to find a piece from each period.
I was also looking for Pottery by Acoma Pottery Icon Lucy Lewis. Four of her amazing pieces came home with us.
This Large Santo Domingo-Kewa Water Jar from the 1920’s was exciting. The Bird Designs and over 100-years Old.
There is just something about Old… Vintage Pottery.
Another early 1900’s Zia Pot with the Whirling Log (Sw****ka) Design.
An Early 1900’s knife with Porcupine Quill Sheath. The backside appears to be a Parfleche Piece. Super Cool!
Julie cut a Great Deal on some High Grade Sleeping Beauty Turquoise.
For Jewelry Artists, this Turquoise has already been drilled for easy Necklace Creation. Come in to talk with Julie and see this Beautiful Turquoise.
Tomorrow, unless something really unique comes in today, I will Show 3-incredible Navajo Weavings that I picked up.

If you are concerned or worried about Kachina’s (sometimes referred to as Katsina’s), you should not be.
They are here to help you in Life and to teach Children and Adults about living.
Although I am not a Collector, if you would happen to come to the House you would see 40 or 50 Kachina’s…. Ok, I have not counted, maybe a few more, but I don’t think I have 99 like my Great Friend Robbie.
But this past week in Santa Fe, I once again “Fell in Love” with the Meaning, the Three-Dimensional Art, and more than anything, the Carver’s.
Most think that it is the Hopi People that do much of the Carving, but many of the other Pueblo’s carve as well.
These three Teachers came Home to the Gallery with me from our Adventure Trip.
I find Carvers to be Very Kind, Smart, and Gentle in Nature. The ones that I know seem to have “Old Souls”…. As if they have been here before or forever.
The 1st two pictures are of the Pahlik Mana, associated with the Butterfly and with Moisture. This Amazing Kachina is by Hopi-Navajo Carver Shawn Deel.
The large Tableta is elaborately Painted with Clouds and Rain Symbols. This Kachina is associated with the Annual Cycle of Spring and the Renewal of Life.
Julie and I both love the “Duck or Pawik Kachina” by Kevin Honyouti.
So here is the TEST.
What do you think a Duck would want?
Answer; Water or Moisture. So if you need or want water, you might talk with “the Pawik or Duck”.
Kachina’s have a meaning and each Carver puts their “Spin” on the Image.
The Wakas or Cow by Sam Masayumptewa, what would you be talking to him about….
Increase in Production of Cattle. Either Number of Calves Born or Weight Gain.
Most times you have to Study the Kachina that you are looking at.
Like with any Art, Kachina’s speak to you. Are you Hearing what they are saying.
Collecting can be Educational and Fun… and if nothing else, the Carver’s are People that you will Love.
We are OPEN Today, Tomorrow, & Saturday. Come in to See Us and Enjoy Art from Kachina’s, to Paintings, to Pottery, and Weavings, Jewelry and So Much More.

I have to laugh at myself. I know that I plan to Post everyday, and having pictures allow me to tell a story. But I was born at a time that we didn’t take many pictures. Oh Birthdays, Most Holidays, and at Family Get-to-Together’s pictures were taken. Most reside in multiple drawers in our Guest Bedroom.
We just returned from 10-Days in the lap of Art. Artist, Dealers, and Traders of all kinds, like “a Moth to a Flame” are drawn to Santa Fe, New Mexico (founded in 1610) on the 3rd Weekend of August.
This Year was the 101st Indian Art Market and This Year did not disappoint!
While I have a Million Memories of the last 10-days, I only have 50 or so Pictures.
But this year was Special for me. While I have owned many pieces of Pottery created by the Highly Admired and Collected Acoma Artist Lucy M Lewis (1890-1992), this year I found 4 of her Exquisite Pieces.
While I did take pictures of this one before packing them up, I forgot to take pictures of the other 3.
Acoma Pueblo was settled around the Year 1000.
That same year Taos Pueblo and Oraibi (where the Hopi reside) were settled.
Lucy, to me is Special, when you study her life you discover that she spent her entire Life at Acoma.
Most of her Pottery was sold (for the 1st time) within 20-miles of Acoma. Many Sold to Tourists on a Railroad Adventure or to the brave traveling on Route 66.
In 1950 she Won the Blue Ribbon at the Gallup (New Mexico) Fair (Which is still held Annually). And, Lucy M Lewis was discovered!
Today Her Pottery is in Every Major Museum and Collection in the United States.
I sold my Personal Lucy Lewis Bowl to a Museum years ago and had not replaced it.
Now I have 4, one of which will come Home.
This is probably a Circa 1980 Bowl in absolutely Perfect Condition. The Flute Player is different on either side. I will have to Study it more.
Today I am Extremely Happy!

We have One Million Memories of the last 10-Days of having the Opportunity to see Amazing Pueblo Pottery, Hopi Kachina’s, Navajo Weavings, Paintings, and of course Jewelry.
So many very kind Artists & Dealers who were willing to not only show you their art, but teach, and answer questions.
As most know, I am a Bolo Guy. This Major 6000-Gram Turquoise Stone set in Silver created by the Future Star Jewelry Artist Phillip Morse, Jr. Immediately grabbed both Julie’s & My Attention.
It was very hard to decide to walk away and not buy this Major Statement Piece.
I did not walk away from the Two Statement Bolo’s from the amazing Zuni Jewelry Artist Team of Raylan & Patty Edaakie.
If you are interested in a Major Statement Bolo, you will want to see these two incredible pieces.
Normally, we are doing 2-Shows, Selling during these 10-Days.
This Year we spent 10-Crazy Days viewing 100’s of Million Dollars of Art.
10-Days in Intense Learning, A Full 4-Years of Art Education in 10-VERY Full 14-16 hour days.
And I would Love to start over tomorrow, doing it all over again.

One of the things that we have had on our agenda was to pick up a large Collection of Pottery. And then do some looking.
The 1st two pictures are of one of the Great Jars that was in the Collection.
To our Absolute Surprise & Joy, the Creator of the Wonderful Jar and one of the first people that we ran into at Indian Market was Jemez Pueblo Potter Carol Vigil.
She has this Wonderful Table of works that she has done.
We had such a Wonderful Visit.
Arthur Holmes, Jr. the amazing Hopi Carver created this $30,000 Masterpiece!
It was awarded the Blue Ribbon in Class IV: Wooden Pueblo Figurative Carving & Sculpture.
So many great Carver’s were at this year’s Santa Fe Indian Market. Our Customer Base in Wichita for the most part are not large Collectors of Hopi Kachina’s.
I met and talked with so many of the Artists that we have purchased from in the past.
They lit the “Flame of Passion” in me again for this Multi-Faceted Art Form.
Multiple-Award Winner Randy Brokeshoulder was there with his amazing Kachina. Randy is one of the nicest guys that you would ever want to meet.
Zuni Jewelry Artist Raylan and Patty Edaakie created the Necklaces on the right & left.
Don’t notice the Amazing Bolo in the middle, that if still there is coming home with me.
Look at this Wedding Vase by Carol Lucero-Gashupin of Jemez Pueblo!
And Yes, flowers were everywhere. Look at the Green Feathered Hummingbird.
