One week remains in September - Childhood Cancer Awareness Month - to share more information about Childhood Cancer.

According to the Children's Cancer Research Fund, each year, more than 15,000 kids and young adults are diagnosed with cancer—that’s about 43 per day.

Though the 5-year-survival rate for childhood cancers has reached 80 percent, nearly 2,000 kids under age 19 die each year, making cancer the leading killer of children by disease.

And that’s just in the United States. In 2016, over 300,000 kids and young adults were diagnosed worldwide.

In September and every month, we recognize Childhood Cancer and strive for a cure.

AMR locations nationwide are currently enrolling in investigational Adult RSV vaccine clinical research studies. Happy Grandparents Day!

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is most often associated with newborns and children under four. However, RSV, much like the flu and coronavirus, can cause long-term damage to the lungs. It can be life-threatening for adults 60 years and older and for those with compromised health conditions.

One reason RSV prevention is so important in elderly adults is due to the social normalcy that seniors are often child care providers to their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Volunteers needed for RSV vaccine study in Lexington 09/07/2021

Dr. Mark Adams, AMR Lexington, discussed Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) with WKTY recently.

“It’s very prevalent. In fact, it’s probably about half the incidents of flu which is quite a bit of numbers from that stand point,” Dr. Adams said. “It affects the elder population probably like it does the pediatric.”

Dr. Adams is tells us testing for the virus is relatively new and, since it began, data shows RSV impacts roughly 177,000 and kills nearly 14,000 Americans over the age of 65 every year, compared to just 200-500 children.

“Now, we have the ability to test for it and this vaccine is the first to be developed to try to prevent that,” Dr. Adams said. https://www.wkyt.com/2021/09/02/volunteers-needed-rsv-vaccine-study-lexington/

How you can help Norfolk researchers develop a vaccine for RSV 09/02/2021

Dr. Mary Bailey, AMR Norfolk, was interviewed about our current RSV vaccine clinical research study. This study is also being conducted at our Wichita East, Wichita West, El Dorado and Newton research centers.

"RSV has been been on our doorstep for a long time," said Dr. Mary Bailey, MD, a physician investigator with the Alliance for Multispecialty Research in Norfolk. "What we're seeing now in the U.S., again per CDC surveillance data, is a rise in reported cases within children at this point during the summer months."

"We need participants and we appreciate participants. This is how all vaccines really all medications are brought to the general public," Bailey said.

AMR is looking for anyone 60 and older to participate. It is a multi-year trial, but volunteers will be compensated for their time.
