Meet our founder, Duane Billinger, who started his EMS career in 1980, certifying as an EMT and a CPR instructor. He certified as a Paramedic in 1985 and an EMT instructor in 1990. In 1994, he started teaching EMT and advanced EMT classes full time. In 1998, he went to work in a hospital setting, in the ICU, ER and then the heart cath lab, as well as working part time for an air ambulance service. He has been on the board of various local, regional, state and national associations of EMS. Additionally, he has taught more than 50 EMT and Advanced EMT classes, and was a Clinical Educator for the EZ IO.

Today, Duane’s focus is on making sure every school, church and business has correctly located AEDs and that they are in good working order.

ASHI CPR and AED courses are designed specifically for the average citizen. A “broken heart” can actually feel like a heart attack. Those intense and sudden feelings of sadness you feel when you lose a family member or a beloved pet - or even a job that brings you joy - can pretty closely mimic the symptoms of a heart attack. How? Well, stress hormones are released into the body and they are able to cause chest pain and even shortness of breath.

Men experience the well-known and typical heart attack symptoms of chest pain, discomfort, and pressure. They, too, can experience pain in other areas like a woman does - such as the arms, neck, back, and jaw, as well as experience a shortness of breath, sweating and discomfort that mimics heartburn.

A very important question we hear often: Can someone be held Can I be held liable for performing CPR or First Aid?

Eat your fruits and veggies for your heart. In terms of heart health, both fruits and vegetables are high in potassium and other nutrients that can lower blood pressure and prevent cardiovascular disease. Also, eating more fruits and vegetables can “fill you up,” making you less inclined to eat foods that are not as beneficial, such as meat, cheeses, and sugary snacks.
