History of Juneteenth!

On “Freedom’s Eve,” or the eve of January 1, 1863, the first Watch Night services took place. On that night, enslaved and free African Americans gathered in churches and private homes all across the country awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. At the stroke of midnight, prayers were answered as all enslaved people in Confederate States were declared legally free. Union soldiers, many of whom were black, marched onto plantations and across cities in the south reading small copies of the Emancipation Proclamation spreading the news of freedom in Confederate States. Only through the Thirteenth Amendment did emancipation end slavery throughout the United States.

But not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas.

June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. The second Independence Day!

Fraud is a Phone Call Away

You’ve probably gotten a spam call or two (or more if we’re being honest!) within your lifetime. The latest trend seems to be targeting healthcare members. Scammers are calling pretending to be your agent thanks to AI voice recognition and/or receiving calls from the carrier requesting you to provide your information again to be sure you are in the correct plan.

Please do not fall for this...! Some members are seeing changes in deductible, max out of pocket, premium and/or changed to a different carrier than originally enrolled.

Be suspicious of unsolicited phone calls from anyone asking about your coverage or other related information or offering to do a complimentary coverage check.

Do not provide personal information, including birthdates, unless you are certain of a person's authority to have the information.
Scammers frequently use AI to get information from those they call by using voice cloning programs. These calls will sound exactly like they’re coming from someone they trust. If a you get a strange call that sounds like it’s from someone they know, they should hang up and call the person at a number they know is theirs.

If you're ever unsure about the legitimacy of an unknown caller, you should reach out directly agent to verify.

If you should receive a call as such immediately let your agent know as soon as possible so we can assist prior to the policy or agent of record (AOR) being changed.

1). Ga***rd Nelson a US Senator organized Earth Day! On April 22, 1970.
2). The idea for Earth Day came after a series of environmental catastrophes
3). April 22, 1970, some 20 million American citizens took to the streets across the city to protest against environmental crises such as water pollution, oil spills, forest fires, air pollution etc.
4). Earth Day is on April 22 because of college schedules - nestled between spring break and final exams, when the weather was mild enough to allow people to be outside.
5). The Environmental Protection Agency was created after the first Earth Day
6). Earth Day went global in 1990
7). The Paris Agreement opened for signature on Earth Day - the most significant international climate accord in history, was opened for signature on Earth Day in 2016.
8). United Automobile Workers union played a role in making Earth Day possible - The former head of the United Automobile Workers (UAW) union was one of the biggest contributors to the original Earth Day, donating $2,000 in 1970 (the equivalent of more than $15,500 today).
9). Organizers are trying to have the biggest Earth Day cleanup event in history in 2024 - earthday.org is working with Malaysian organizations to host the largest cleanup in Earth Day history. Penang Island, the country’s main island, has been impacted by plastic pollution due to tourism. At least 100,000 volunteers will be cleaning up the beaches and forests in the country.
10). Tens of millions of trees have been planted on Earth Day - Some 18 million acres of forest are lost every year due to deforestation, per the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization.

Why homeowners and auto insurance rates are rising?

Home/Replacement prices have tripled and some cases quadrupled in the past few years. Add climate changes on top of that and you can see why the increases in home insurance.
Kansas - Average premium in February 2024: $4,072
An increase from January 2020: 32%

For auto insurance the rates continue to increase due to cost of labor, labor shortage, cost of materials, inflation and climate changes!

Analyst say to try to ride it out! If you can stay with your current homeowner policy it is best. Contact your agent and review your current plan.

Homeowner - Only switch carriers if you have to do so. Look at your current coverage, can you increase/decrease coverages to lower some cost? Should you go ahead and repair that roof this year?
Auto owners - Keep in mind some autos are rated higher due to thefts. Do your homework before buying a car and see what the cost of insurance will be.
