We have a pediatric first aid + CPR/AED class this Sunday, July 28th from 1-7p.m. at our Haysville location. This class is approved by KDHE and acceptable for anyone working with children.

I cannot say it enough.

IT IS NOT LIKE YOU SEE ON TV!

CPR is hard. To perform good chest compressions you must break the protective shield around our major organs. No that does not mean breaking ribs. That means pressing down firmly in center of chest and breaking the cartilage between the ribs and the bone in the center of the chest (sternum).

We must press the sternum straight down to compress blood from the heart to our brain. This is hard work but absolutely necessary.

If an instructor has told you "you have to break ribs to do good compressions" then please find a new instructor. Though we could break ribs, especially on those who have more fragile bones, we want to do everything possible to not break ribs. Ribs are in place to protect our lungs and yes, our heart.

As we start the holiday weekend I want to wish everyone a safe and good weekend with your family and friends. As you enjoy the long weekend don't forget why we have the long weekend.

It is in memory of all those we lost. For some this will be a weekend of fun, drinking, bbq's and lake time. For others it will be a weekend of remembering friends and family they lost. For some this weekend may be a dark place for them.

During our Community Hands-Only CPR event we will have a table of different types of AEDs for you to play with and a trained healthcare provider to go over the AEDs with you.

We want everyone to be comfortable in case of an emergency.

Remember you do not need to be certified in CPR to use an AED but why not become familiar with them before an emergency occurs.

I'm sure everyone has heard of the high risk for severe storms and tornadoes. In the last 24 hours there have already been 114 tornado warnings through tornado alley.

*Please pay attention to upcoming storms.

*Please have a plan on where to go and if traveling pay attention to your surroundings and safe places to stop.

*Do not try and outrun a tornado! Drive in the opposite direction of where the tornado is heading and keep an eye on the tornado to make sure it does not change direction.

*We prepare for emergencies- one way we do not think of is what happens after a severe storm. Damages or loss of house/belongings. Take pictures of your belongings in case you need an insurance claim and make sure your insurance is active!

*Be Safe and Be Smart
