A male polyphemus moth, one of the largest silk moths in the United States, was discovered in the Xeriscape Garden by our Gardeners.

👁️ Fun Fact #1: This moth is named after Polyphemus, the giant cyclops from Greek mythology who had a single large, round eye in the middle of his forehead.

📅 Fun Fact #2: An adult polyphemus moth lives less than a week! It has no ability to eat or drink because its only purpose is to mate.

𝑨𝒔𝒌 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑬𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒕: 🌹Do roses require a lot of work? Lead Gardeners, Molly Parsons & Laura Shumaker, say “no,” that’s not an accurate assumption. Take time to smell the roses and learn how to care for them and make them the star of any garden.

•Deadhead spent rose flowers to trigger rebloom.
•Scout for a fungal disease called black spot on rose leaves.
•For small outbreaks, remove infected leaves by hand. For widespread infection, spray fungicide on affected roses every 10 days.
•Scout for Japanese beetles which feed directly on the flower. Remove them by hand and drop them into soapy water to kill them.
•Feed roses once a week with liquid feed fertilizer.
