Acne rosacea is an inflammatory condition that affects about 10% of adults. While conventional medicine typically treats acne rosacea by prescribing lotions and potions, Functional Medicine seeks to get at the problem’s root cause.
On a previous episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I sat down with Dr. Todd LePine to talk about common drivers of acne rosacea, why it is frequently related to gut health, and how they treat patients with this condition.

Learning about insulin resistance has really helped me get my health and my skin under control.
Simply put, insulin resistance occurs when your cells stop responding to the hormone insulin. This causes higher insulin and blood sugar levels and can potentially lead to type 2 diabetes.
Insulin resistance is linked to various other ailments including heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, PCOS and cancer. So it’s definitely something that should be on your radar!
When it comes to insulin resistance and skin issues there's a definitely link since it causes high inflammation levels throughout the body.

My name is Pam! I have been a full time, practicing esthetician for over 18 years! I completed my health coach training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in 2005 and was certified as a Nutritional Aesthetics Provider in 2020.
I treat skin issues holistically, which means I get to know you and your health as a whole before deciding on a course of action.
If you’ve struggled with your skin in any way, whether it’s acne, aging or anything else, I want you to know that the first step to getting the results your looking for is to shift your mindset away from “fixing” your skin or chasing the ever unattainable ideal of “anti-aging” and instead focus on understanding, feeding and supporting the skin.
On the day to day you can find me at my spa & boutique, chatting with clients and helping them reach their skin goals through holistic treatments as well as choosing healthy skin care, makeup and other personal products. Fact: Repairing your skin's natural barrier is the key to long-term clear skin. If the roof is leaking, you'll never be able to repair the inside of the house.
Just a few tips for fixing that "leaky roof" or compromised skin barrier. A healthy skin barrier is absolutely necessary for clear, healthier looking skin. Just like the roof on your house, it keeps the bad stuff out!
My best tips for restoring a healthy skin barrier:
Hydration. Even if you have oily skin, you need hydration (water)
Nutrition. What you eat determines the quality of skin cells you are producing right now!
Anti-oxidant skincare. Vitamin C and other anti-oxidants fight free radical damage. Healthy exfoliation. Consulting a pro can prevent over exfoliation which wrecks your skin's barrier.

Acne is a tricky creature. It effects a wide range of ages for different reasons. It can be a symptom of other health problems or a result of lifestyle and dietary factors. No matter the reason for your acne it can cause many unwanted side effects like scarring, depression, anxiety and low self-esteem.
It's best to work closely with an acne specialist for a long-term treatment plan, but there are some short-term tricks for temporary relief. Here's a coule easy ones I love:
Ice.
Applying ice directly to a pimple for a short period of time can reduce inflammation and swelling. Be careful though, if your skin is ultra-sensitive because extreme cold can cause more redness in some, especially those with Rosacea.
Green Tea.
Applying a green tea bag compress to the pimple can reduce inflammation and relieve swelling. Brew some green tea, let the teabag cool to room temperature then put the teabag directly on a pimple and hold it there for up to 20 minutes.
(You can also use a green tea soaked wash cloth)

As an esthy with 18 years expeience, I know what works when it comes to troubleshooting stubborn reoccuring breakouts. You know the type, you've tried everything and they keep coming back. It may take some time working with a holistic practitioner to get to the root causes and finally clear it up for good. In the meantime there's a few secret wepons I rely on for my clients.
Retinol
Proceed with caution here. This one is not for everyone and it helps to have some professional guidance when using Retinol products. I have a favorite go-to treatment oil I usually advise my clients to spot treat blemishes with. (DM me for more info on it!)
High Frequency
This is an old-school modality that we use in the spa. Nothing new or fancy, it just works! High Frequency uses an alternating electrical current to sanitize the skin, killing bacteria. It also helps with increased circulation to speed up the body’s own natural healing process. This is included in our Clarifying Facial and in our Integrative Acne Program custom treatments. (This treatment may not be advised for everyone, our estheticians can determine if you’re a good candidate for it.)
If you're ready to finally achieve clear skin and keep it clear, I'm here to help. Book and consultation or treatment today!

If you are suffering from any of the following issues it's a clue that your skin barrier is in need of repair...
-Dry, scaly skin
-Itchiness
-Rough or discolored patches
-Breakouts or rashes
-Sensitive or inflamed areas
-Bacterial, viral or fungal skin infections (and infected acne)
Your skin's outermost layer resembles the design of a brick wall. Protien from skin cells are the "bricks" and lipids and fats are the "mortar" between the bricks. When those lipds are depleted or damaged the barrier dries out and more irritants can get in which trigger inflammation.
I've seen this happen over and over with those who use products with too many harsh, toxic ingredients or from over-exfoliating the skin. Without a healthy barrier, it's impossible to clear up this skin. That's where I come in... Schedule a consultation and treatment today and we'll get that barrier healthy again!

You can have both Vitamin D and sun protection. You don’t have to choose just one.
Vitamin D is super important for the health of many bodily functions. It's also an "excuse" I've heard a lot over the years for not wearing SPF daily.
But did you know it doesn’t take much sun exposure for your body to produce Vitamin D? No more that 10-15 minutes of exposure two to three times a week is usually enough. You can also protect your face from aging UV rays and still get your vitamin D with your arms or legs exposed.
Vitamin D from a combination of diet and supplements. Did you know salmon, tuna, egg yolks and mushrooms are a great source of vitamin D?

Whatever sunscreen you choose, make sure you have one that is broad spectrum, meaning it protects you from both UVA and UVB rays (think A for aging and B for burning).
Remember the fairer your skin is the more protection you will need.
Darker skin types are not as vulnerable to burning from UV light but they still need protection from UV damage.
If you are acne prone, don’t use the sun’s rays to dry up your acne! It’s tempting, I know, but the long-term effects and risks to your health are not worth it! See an esthetician for better acne clearing methods.
Check your expiration dates. If there is no expiration on your SPF, then assume it’s only good for one year.
Don’t forget to protect the ears and the scalp, these commonly get forgotten.
Sunscreen is only one line of defense agains UV damage. Throw in a sun hat, sunglasses and consider a little time spent in the shade!

Is your sunscreen helping or hurting your skin? I've litereally spent over a decade looking for healthy options.
Well I'm happy to say that times have changed for the better and I've finally been able to find some amazing products! I like to steer clear of common sunscreen chemicals like Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Avobenzone and Octisalate because of their potential harmful affect on the body and the environment.
These are just a few of my favorites in our healthy beauty boutique right now.

There are a meriad of complications for acne sufferers who wear makeup. Is all the makeup being thoroughly removed each night? Thicker, “concealing” formulations and the like can be hard to remove. Leaving behind even small traces of these products can be problematic for your pores. Double cleansing is a must for acne sufferers who wear makeup daily.
Are your makeup brushes getting thoroughly cleaned regularly? Even the “cleanest” makeup can cause problems when applied with a dirty brush. (This goes for hands too, make sure your hands are clean if you apply makeup with your fingers.) I like to wash my brushes with a gentle hand soap, unscented castile soap or you can even use your face cleanser.
Need help finding the right makeup that actually supports your skin goals? I'm here for ya! Book a Clean Your Routine session with me today!

With over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer is America’s most common cancer. At least one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable cancers.
Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.
Don’t get sunburned.
Avoid tanning, and never use UV tanning beds!
Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.

About 90% of my new acne clients are using thick, clogging makup, and usuallity it's from a sexy department store brand. I get it though, clients are usually just trying to cover up acne and other skin issues, but often they end up making matters worse.
Department store and drug store makeups expecially are often loaded with heavy fragrance that can cause unwanted reactions and many are loaded with synthetic ingredients that over time will actually stress the skin and contribute to more acne, more fine lines, dull texture and unevent skin tone.
What if I told you that the right makeup could actually help enhance the health of your skin and help you reach your skin goals?

Don't think food could be causing your breakouts? Think again. There's an important distinction between a food allergy and a food sensitivity. Just because you don't have an immediate reaction to something you eat, doesn't mean it's not causing a problem for your skin or your health.
Food sensitivites are delayed reactions to foods. It can take 48 hours-3 weeks for a food sensitivity to exibit symptoms. Sensitivites are much less obvious than allergies and can be difficult to identify. One of the signs of food sensitivites is acne and skin rashes.
Need help getting to the bottom of your break outs? I'm here for you!

How is acne connected to our gut health? Let me simplify it for you...
When your gut has trouble digesting food or if the intestinal barrier is damaged it can interfere with our ability to absorb nutrients. Lack of key nutrients can cause the skin's natural exfoliation process to slow down, which leads to cell build-up and clogged pores.
Sluggish digestion and elimination interfere with liver function and hormone balance. Hormone imbalance can lead to acne.
Healthy gut = healthy skin!

What causes you to have good skin, which is the largest organ in the human body, and what wreaks havoc to create bad skin?
If you believe the dermatology, plastic surgery, and cosmetic industries, you should slather on numerous products to get great skin and make you look better. Of course, these industries have a wide range of these products to sell you!
I take a different approach. What if I told you the secret to healthy skin is not about what you put on your body, but what you put in your body?
The dirty secret these industries don’t want you to know is that beauty really does come from within. You can heal many skin issues by balancing your hormones, changing your diet, optimizing your nutrient status and healing your gut.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take care of yourself from the outside. There’s good stuff I recommend you use to maintain healthy skin, but that’s not ultimately going to solve the problem if you have skin issues.
Some of the stuff that dermatologists give, such as steroid creams, peelers and antibiotics taken by mouth can harm you long term by wrecking your gut. Using antibiotics for acne, like other invasive procedures, only buries the problem.
