Join us virtually for a Lemon's Legacies Porch Talk on April 2 at 1 pm ET. Register at https://cwm.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJckf-2hrDIiHdHDibM52fYttxZwA7OFVoQS.

This Lemon's Legacies Porch Talk will introduce a transformative dialogue on mental and emotional health in Black communities. Panelists will confront the critical need to expand mental health discourse and interventions beyond ingrained traditional coping mechanisms often steeped in religiosity and rooted in the Black church.

Generational traumas stemming from atrocities of slavery and systemic racism historically are shouldered in silence, with the Black church standing as the cornerstone for communal support. By interrogating the “Leave It on The Altar” mentality, we probe cultural nuances framing mental illness as weakness rather than legitimate health concern and labeling the pursuit and engagement of mental health support as lack of faith versus viable option. We intend to unravel the threads of religious grooming that weave through our experiences, foster an atmosphere of silent endurance, and exalt long-suffering.

In exploring experiences of family secrecy, internalized stigma, boundary resistance, toxic productivity and professional burnout, inadequate representation among mental healthcare professionals, and the dearth of cultural competence among non-Black providers, we illuminate ways newer generations firmly reject shame culture, advocate for autonomy, establish and enforce boundaries, and normalize seeking help. We propose adopting this repudiatory model toward a systemic overhaul and innovative reimagination of mental health services for Black people—one in which self-preservation is accepted and celebrated as new tradition, communal experience, and generational legacy.
Aligning with the objectives of the 14th Annual Lemon Project Spring Symposium, this panel proposes catalysts for change that uphold the sanctity of Black life and our intrinsic right to flourish.

Leading American historian Nell Irvin Painter is the author of many books, including Sojourner Truth, Creating Black Americans and The History of White People. In her 2018 book, Old in Art School, Painter recounts her journey from scholar to artist including her enrollment in the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design. There, she became a student again in her 60s and continues as a working, professional artist in her 80s. Painter will discuss the struggles in making a late-life pivot and the obstacles and biases she was up against as she pursued her dream of becoming an artist. Further, she will discuss the intersection of history and art making as it applies to her work and her upcoming essay collection, I Just Keep Talking (Doubleday, March 2024).

Lyon G. Tyler Department of History

The dedicated faculty and distinctive history of the Lyon Gardiner Tyler Department of History give it a unique character. The Department fosters a learning environment that revolves around close interaction among students and professors.

Housed in James Blair Hall on Old Campus, the Department is a stone’s throw from Colonial Williamsburg. History was first taught at William & Mary in 1803. Today the Department houses more than 35 permanent faculty members, 50 master’s and doctoral students currently in the program, and approximately 100 undergraduate history majors graduating every year. The faculty have areas of expertise ranging across the globe and covering every era from the ancient world to the twenty-first century.

Our recently redesigned History major encourages undergraduate students to explore the interacting histories of North America, Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Graduate students pursue master’s and doctoral degrees here in a broad range of chronological and geographic areas. We pride ourselves on helping our students to acquire a deep and broad knowledge of the events, personalities, and issues of world history, and to develop the methodological and analytical skills required to open up all realms of the past to critical inquiry. We push students to question their own assumptions about the past, and we train them to articulate their ideas in lucid oral and written form.

Our faculty members have won William & Mary's, Virginia's, and the historical profession's most prestigious awards for teaching, for scholarship, and for general excellence; US News & World Report's 2017 rankings of graduate programs in History named William & Mary one of the top three universities in the country in which to study U.S. colonial history, alongside the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University.
