I get asked about the pearls a lot.

They’re an idea that’s a gift from my Memaw.
It’s not her birthday or anything.
But. I have ADHD, and I’ll honestly forget to tell you on the “right day.”

So.

She loved pearls as well. And that’s where I learned it.

And, she's the one who told me where they come from.

…But it was the way she told it.

She said...

"It's actually not a very pretty story. You see. The oyster... which is already an animal made of shells and … (she whispered:) snot... gets a little grain of sand inside. And it hurts. Like when it gets in your eye. But it doesn't have fingers, of course. So it just coats it in slime so it doesn't hurt so much. But the slime hardens, and that annoys the oyster. So it covers it again in more slimey snot. And it just keeps doing that until it stops hurting. And that's around the time it's a pearl worth having. ...Most of the best things in life, worth having, are the same. They hurt. They're gross. They're annoying and painful and you wish they didn’t exist at all. But you just keep at ‘em... and eventually.... you've got somethin' worth havin'."
