WFD JOINS THE LESS THAN 1% OF ACCREDITED DEPARTMENTS WITH AN ISO CLASS 1 RATING

WFD was notified by the Insurance Services Office (ISO) that the department has earned the status of an ISO Class I Designation. The change will take place on April 1, 2022.

“This is an outstanding accomplishment for our department and the citizens of Wilmington,” said Interim Chief Steve Mason. “It is a testament of the excellent service WFD provides each and every day and a direct result of the support the department receives from Council, former Chief Martinette’s leadership, former Administrative Services Manager Meredith Mulford’s persistence, and the adoption of a constant improvement business model established through our accreditation efforts.”

The ISO is an independent, for-profit organization that scores fire departments on how they are doing against industry standards to determine property insurance costs.

An ISO fire rating is a score provided to fire departments and insurance companies by the ISO. The score reflects how prepared a community and area is for fires. There are many factors that contribute to an area's score like water supply (managed by ), station distribution, training, number of personnel per apparatus, community risk reduction, and more.

After analyzing the data, the ISO assigns a Public Protection Classification (PPC) on a scale from 1 to 10. The higher the ISO fire protection class (with Class 1 being the best), the “better” the department – at least in the eyes of the ISO. A good ISO fire rating demonstrates a commitment to excellence as verified by a third-party review.

According to ISO, only 338 of the nearly 30,000 fire departments in the United States have earned this prestigious recognition. The Wilmington Fire Department is also an accredited organization through the Center for Public Safety Excellence. Their website lists only 113 organizations worldwide that are both an accredited agency and an ISO Class 1 Department.

Our hearts are broken as we learn today of the loss of one of our fellow brothers to su***de. He battled his demons for years and tried to reach out when he needed help, but his equation was just so complicated for him to solve alone.

Sometimes it’s hard when you’re standing right in front of equation to see the solution.

But, know, healing happens. Sometimes it takes a few tries to find the solution, but a solution is there.

You just have to keep fighting.

When the demons become overwhelming, make a promise to yourself to reach out and ask for help!

Know that a suicidal crisis although intense, is often short lived. You just have to make it through the intensity.

Create a Crisis Card for those times.

Use your Crisis Card:

1. Su***de Prevention lifeline 1-800-273-TALK

2. Three friends you can count on

3. 3 pleasurable activities (gardening, exercise, journaling)

4. A breathing exercise
(Navy seals breathing, Calm , or Headspace )

Lastly,

It’s ok to not be ok! Life is struggle and you are not alone.

Love Dena
