WILMINGTON WATERING TIPS 💧 We sure get some high temperatures and humidity as we move into August, so it’s time to adjust that watering routine! 🚿 Here are some expert tips to keep your plants happy and hydrated 👇
⏰ Water Early or Late: Water your garden in the early morning or late evening to minimize evaporation. This allows the water to soak into the soil and reach the roots better.
💦 Deep Watering: Instead of frequent shallow watering, give your garden a good deep soak. This encourages roots to grow deeper, making your plants more drought-resistant.
🪵 Mulch Matters: Spread some mulch around your plants to hold in moisture and regulate soil temperature. Mulch helps cut down on evaporation and reduces the need for frequent watering!
📏 Check Soil Moisture: Before watering, check the soil moisture by sticking your finger a few inches into the soil. If it feels dry at that depth, it’s time to water!
🌧️ Watch the Weather: Keep an eye on the forecast. If rain’s comin’, you can skip a watering session. During dry spells, your plants will need a little extra attention.
🪴 Potted Plants: Don’t forget about your potted plants! They can dry out quicker than those in the ground. Check ’em daily and water as needed.
By following these tips, you can keep your garden lush and vibrant through the hot August days. More questions? Come in and see us!

🐛 Pesticides:
- Insecticidal Soap: Safely tackles soft-bodied pests like aphids and spider mites.
- Neem Oil: Natural defense against pests and fungal diseases.
🌱 Herbicides:
- Pre-emergent: You’ll want to have used these early in the season to prevent w**d seeds from germinating.
- Post-emergent: Use this to target existing w**ds with minimal impact on garden plants.
🍄 Fungicides:
- Copper-based: Effective against blight, mildew, and leaf spot.
- Sulfur-based: Controls various fungal diseases.

The last few weeks of the spring planting season are coming up quick y’all, so get those flowers and veggies in the ground ASAP! 🌻🍅🌷🫑
🌼 FLOWERS:
- Annuals: Best to plant by mid-July, but some heat-tolerant ones are good through late July to early August.
- Perennials: You can plant 'em throughout the summer, but it's best to avoid the hottest times, like late July and August.
🫛 VEGGIES:
- Warm-Season Crops: Tomatoes, peppers, squash, and beans should be planted by mid-July so they have enough time to mature before the first frost.
PRO TIP: Pick plants that can handle the heat and humidity when planting later in the summer like this.

Wilmingtonians! Here is ONE veggie, fruit, herb, AND flower you can plant RIGHT NOW in our coastal climate during late May/early June! 👇
🫑 PEPPERS: Start from transplants (a young plant), put it somewhere it’s going to get plenty of sunlight, and always keep that soil consistently moist. Add our Calcium if fruits have a soft brown area on them (same for tomatoes).
🍓 STRAWBERRIES: Late May is the perfect time to get a new strawberry plant in the ground if you haven’t already! Just make sure you plant it away from any tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, or potatoes you may have and that it’s going to get good, direct sunlight.
🌿 BASIL: Start from transplants (a young plant) or seeds, place somewhere that is going to get A LOT of sun, and keep soil very moist but don’t over-water it, just moisten the root ball..
🌼 MARIGOLDS: These plants needs full sun and a lot of water, especially during establishment. They’re also excellent companion plants for tomatoes, peppers, and other vegetables as they’ll help repel nasty pests!
PRO TIP: Put mulch around your plants to help retain moisture and keep w**ds from growing! 🙌
