Closing out our Hawtie Hawk Spotlights for the season is Skyler!

Skyler’s favorite style of dance is contemporary and a fun fact about her is that she has five younger siblings. Skyler says her favorite memory of being on the team was the 2022 CAA Men’s Basketball Tournament in Washington, d.c. She says it was the only time she has seen the monuments and has been to DC so it was a memorable experience.

We love having Skyler as a part of this team!

Let’s give it up for our rookies this season!

Each and every one of them have been a great asset to our team & we couldn’t imagine this past season without them!

Maddie is from Virginia Beach, VA and will graduate in May with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration with concentration in Marketing Strategy along and a minor in Psychology. During her time at UNCW she has achieved Dean’s List for multiple semesters, served as Vice President of Public Relations for Pi Sigma Epsilon the Marketing and Sales Professional Fraternity, has been a three year member of Phi Mu Fraternity, worked as a Group Fitness Instructor at the UNCW Recreation Center, and has not only been a four year member of the dance team but also served as a captain this past season. After graduation Maddie hopes to move to Charlotte to start her career in Marketing (she is open to network & feel free to connect with her on LinkedIn 😉). She also hopes to continue teaching cycle classes and sharing her passion for health and fitness with others. Here is what Maddie had to say when asked what she is most thankful for from being on the team: “I am incredibly thankful for the ability to continue dancing in college. This team has been my rock since Freshman year, has taught me many life lessons and given me many memories that I will carry on with me throughout my life. I have truly met some of my best friends because of Hawtie Hawks.” Maddie’s advice for incoming freshman is to take it slow! These four years go by even faster than high school and it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle of it all and thinking about your future. Take a deep breath, realize you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be and that these ARE the good ole days. She would like to thank her family and coaches for always believing in her, even when she didn’t believe in her self. Maddie would also like to give a special shoutout to her best friend Brooke who has been cheering her name at every game since Freshman year.

Jaya is from Concord, NC and will graduate in May with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Management and Leadership. During her time at UNCW Jaya has been a member of the Sales Club, Leadership and Management Club, Cameron Executive Network, and Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. In her future she hopes to work into the position of being a Senior Product Manager. When asked about what she was most thankful for from being on the team, here is what she had to say: “I’m most thankful for being able to continue my childhood dream of dancing in college, but I’m extremely grateful for this team because it’s introduced me to some of my lifelong best friends.” Jaya’s advice for incoming freshman is to be present and appreciative of where you are and how far you’ve come, 4 years go by a lot faster than anyone anticipates and a lot changes within that time so it’s important to be patient with yourself and the growth that you have coming but to also recognize it and be proud of yourself. Jaya would like to thank her parents for being her biggest supporters and her coaches and teammates for always being a constant support group no matter the circumstances.

Allie is from Charlotte, NC and will graduate in May with a Bachelor’s of Science in Communications Studies with a minor in Leadership. During her time at UNCW Allie has been a four year member of her sorority, Phi Mu, and served as Secretary, completed an internship at Wray Ward, and has not only been a four year member of the dance team but also served as one of our captains this past season. After graduation Allie plans to move back to Charlotte, pursue a career in Marketing, and tryout for the Carolina Panthers TopCats. When asked what she is most thankful for from being on the team, this is what Allie had to say: “During my time on the dance team, I am most thankful for the chance to continue my love for the art while also creating friendships that I know will last a lifetime.” A piece of advice Allie would give incoming freshman is to take a chance and go for it, because it could end up being one of the most rewarding experiences of your time in college. She would like to give a special thanks to both her mom and dad, because they have been the biggest support system and have helped her continue to pursue her passion for dance.

02/21/2023

Lauren is from Winston-Salem, NC and will graduate in May with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Elementary Education with a concentration in Behavioral Studies. During her time at UNCW Lauren has held Dean’s List every semester and currently holds a cumulative GPA of 4.0. She has also served as a member of Watson Student Leaders for the past two years, volunteered in Grow Zone at Port City Community Church working with toddlers on Sunday mornings for the past year, and she is currently student teaching a 5th grade class in a New Hanover County School. After she graduates Lauren plans to stay and teach elementary school in Wilmington for a few years and then hopes to move to a warmer state like Florida or Texas to teach! When asked what she loves the most about being on the team, here is what she had to say: “Out of the many things I love about dance team, the friendships formed within the team has by far been one of my favorites. I am so thankful for all the support, love, and encouragement we all share among each other.” A piece of advice Lauren has for incoming freshman is to focus on things day by day and to appreciate all the opportunities you have in college. The years FLY by, so be sure to treasure the time you have here at UNCW. Lauren would like to give a special thanks to her mom and dad for their continuous love and support.

Paige is from Cary, NC and will graduate in May with her Bachelors of Science in Nursing. During her time at UNCW she has achieved Dean’s List every semester, is the current President of the Association of Nursing Students, a member of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society, and has not only been a member of the Dance Team for four years but has served us as one of our captains this season. Paige has accepted a position at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC and will be working in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit starting in July! This is what Paige had to say when asked what she is most thankful for from being on the team: “I am most thankful for my opportunity to continue dancing in college. Dance is a large part of who I am, and the friendships I have made on this team have shaped me into who I have become. I am honored to know and love every single girl on this team and will miss it immensely!” Paige’s advice to incoming freshman is to be open! Don’t hold onto people or things that no longer serve your happiness and well-being. Stay open to new experiences, new people, and new places and you will have the best college experience. She would like to thank her mom and dad for being so supportive throughout my years at UNCW. They are her biggest fans and she couldn’t have done it without them.

Sydney is from Raleigh, NC and will graduate this May with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Film Studies with a minor in Digital Arts. During her time at UNCW Sydney has earned Dean’s List every semester, worked as the Social Content Assistant for the Alumni Association for three years, and completed two different internships. One being at Trailblazers Studios in Raleigh and the second at Lighthouse Films in Wilmington. She has animated a short film that has been selected to screen at Cucalorus Film Festival and Uptilt Film Festival. Sydney is also a member of the Hubert A. Eaton Honor Society and has been nominated for two cornerstone awards: The Pat Leonard Senior Medallion and the Distinguished Engagement Award. She plans to pursue a career in post production with the hopes of bringing diverse representation to the screen of kids. When asked what she loves most about being on the team, this is what Sydney has to say: “I have loved how welcoming all the girls have been to me. In an environment that’s hard to fit in, I’m so lucky to have found a safe place in this team.” A piece of advice she has for incoming freshman is that transitioning into college is hard, but it will get easier! Trust the process.
