CFCC Chem Tech Salicylic Acid Reflux
Salicylic acid is a common ingredient used in acne face washes and creams. This week, students began the process of making salicylic acid from oil of wintergreen. The process is simple! Here, the sample is refluxed (heated and condensed) over a period of one hour.

In our CTC 145: Advanced Laboratory Methods course, students use Buchner filtration many times. Here, a food preservative is changed by modifying the pH of the solution. What product is formed? Filtration must happen first (before other tests are attempted).

Stacey Knowles, a student in our CTC 115: Quality Control Laboratory course, filmed a short TikTok of her performing a water hardness titration. Does your water leave a "slick film" on your skin? Problems with soap scum? Scale deposits on appliances? It could be due to your water hardness! Many are curious about the results of THMs in our drinking water! These samples are still being analyzed and our last batch will be completed today. In the meantime, here is the video of the Purge & Trap GCMS system, hard at work! Did you know that helium is used to purge the THMs from the water samples?

Vatrice - Chemical Technology & CFPUA
We are so proud of Vatrice! Hear what she has to say about the Chemical Technology program and working at CFPUA.

Essential oils are not a laughing stock! Scientific studies show that many of them can lower blood pressure, treat headaches, boost immunity, balance hormone levels, and fight infections. Our students learn how to extract clove oil through the process of steam distillation. We love this day as it makes our lab smell wonderful!

A Dean-Stark apparatus can be used for a number of things. However, in our summer CTC 145 course, we use it for fruit or veggies!
