Our fall semester is about to begin! What do we do in Chemical Technology? This semester, we are implementing our first "candle making" exercise. Why? It is all "laboratory"! In our CTC 114: Wet Laboratory Techniques, we get to introduce using an analytical balance, how to measure proper amounts (and mix them), using % to calculate how much fragrance oil to use, and the background of organic compounds, waxes, oils, and aqueous/non-aqueous reagents. After distilling their small "cuts", they begin to analyze them on our Mettler-Toledo International, Inc refractometer and our Shimadzu Corporation (Analytical & Measuring) FTIR instrument. Did they obtain a pure sample? What was their total recovery? Let the laboratory data decide!

What goes on in Chemical Technology Cape Fear Community College? One of our students recently took a trip to Pennsylvania and had a chance to visit a lavender field. She knew she still had to complete our steam distillation laboratory activity. Therefore, she purchased some lavender and brought it into this lab this past week to steam distill it! Our lab smells AMAZING!

What do we do in Chemical Technology? This week, students are producing biodiesel from used canola oil! After cleaning up their product, they perform multiple tests including density (using our automated Rudolph Research density meter), viscosity, acid and soap content (titrations), and a moisture test using our Metrohm eco KF titrator! Can they meet ASTM standards?

This week, Cape Fear Community College offered a Summer Career Academy for rising seventh, eighth, and ninth graders. The Chemical Technology program, with the help from our laboratory technician Kimberly Bufkin, introduced these students to the concept of gel electrophoresis. Eight groups visited our laboratory spaces (two groups per day). Geared toward "the basics", the activity allowed middle-school students to determine "Whose DNA Was Left Behind". They compared DNA from multiple suspects to a sample collected from a crime scene. Can they answer the question of "Who Did It"? (Colored dyes worked great for middle school students!).

People often ask, "what does Chemical Technology Cape Fear Community College do"? One of our training experiments (during summer) includes a steam distillation. Students crush cloves and use steam distillation to extract the essential oil. After the clean-up procedure, they analyze the oil on our Shimadzu Scientific Instruments FTIR system (w/ATR attachment). Crossing their fingers, they hope the database search provides them eugenol as an ID name! David Nuttall (Shimadzu), we always enjoy seeing you on our campus; its means that "new toys" are on the horizon for our students! It seems like yesterday you installed our second FTIR on our campus! We will also provide a shout-out to James McKean at IKA for these "luxury models" hot plates! These have spoiled us and we might not go back to any other models! (Captions attached to pictures).

Last week, one of our students performed a dissolution test on a zinc supplement. Today, aliquots of those zinc supplements were analyzed on the Agilent's atomic absorption spectrometer! How many community college students (or better yet four-year college students) receive training on an AAS system? Our program teaches them how to start up the instrument, align lamps, create the software method, and analyze their batch. Students work independently, so their work is their own! Thanks Agilent Technologies and Brad Wasson for working with the college on our recent purchase! BTW - Finest Natural provided the best results (and was less expensive)!
