Did you know that Jack the Ripper's reign of terror lasted only a few months in 1888 with the majority of his victims killed in September? The five canonical victims of Jack the Ripper were Mary Ann Nichols (found August 31, 1888), Annie Chapman (found September 8, 1888), Elizabeth Stride (found September 30, 1888), Catherine Eddowes (also found September 30, 1888), and Mary Jane Kelly (found November 9, 1888). All the victims were "ladies of the night". The question for many historians is what made him stop killing. The mystery has never been solved.

This week in 1879, James Heaton took the life of his lover, Mary Radcliffe in the alcove of the building that is now Slice of Life downtown. He then ran and when cornered by the police, turned the gun on himself. The picture below is an old picture of the alcove and a copy of the news article about the crime.

In the Blue Post’s haunted alleyway, the eerie glow beckons the spirits of patrons past to visit…and maybe the spirits a few pirates as well.

This week's Christmas monster is Jólakötturinn, the Icelandic Yule Cat that takes fashion policing to the extreme. This is no sweet little kitty. The Yule Cat towers above the tallest houses. As it prowls about Iceland on Christmas night, the Yule Cat peers in through the windows. If new clothes are among the possessions earned by good children, the big cat will move along. But if a child was too lazy to earn new clothes, the Jólakötturinn will burst into the house and eat the child!
