What Is an Energy Drink?
• A beverage that typically contains large amounts of caffeine, added sugars, other additives, and legal stimulants such as guarana, taurine, and L-carnitine. These legal stimulants can increase alertness, attention, energy, as well as increase blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing.
• These drinks are often used by students to provide an extra boost in energy. However, the stimulants in these drinks can have a harmful effect on the nervous system
As many as 11.6% of secondary schools in some districts sell energy drinks in vending machines, school stores, and snack bars.
Nationwide, 75% of school districts do not have a policy in place regarding these types of beverages that contain high levels of caffeine for sale in high school vending machines, schools stores, or a la carte in the cafeteria.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that adolescents do not consume energy drinks, yet between 30–50% reported consuming energy drinks.
The National Federation of State High School Associations recommends that young athletes should not use energy drinks for hydration, and information about the potential risk should be widely distributed to young athletes.
What Can You Do?
• Parents can be aware of the dangers and educate their children; in 2011, 1,499 adolescents aged 12 to 17 years went to the emergency room for an energy drink related emergency.
• Teachers and other school staff can educate students about the danger of consuming too much caffeine, including energy drinks.
• Coaches can educate athletes about the difference between energy drinks and sports drinks and potential dangers of consuming highly caffeinated beverages.
• School nutrition staff can provide only healthy beverages such as fat-free/low-fat milk, water, and 100% juice if extra items (i.e., a la carte items) are sold in the cafeteria.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), typically, flu season begins in the fall. Flu activity usually peaks between December and February and significant activity can continue into May. It’s important to get your annual flu vaccination in early fall (July and August are too early for our area) because it’s best to be vaccinated before the flu begins spreading in your community.
Of course, flu vaccine is not the only precaution to avoid the flu;
1. always wash hands frequently, preferably with soap and water or an approved hand sanitizer
2. cough and sneezes into your elbow or cover with a tissue that you then discard
3. AND, If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school until you have been fever free for at least 24 hours
Patient Centered Care will be having flu clinics beginning October 1st. Stay tune for more information or call the office with questions. 910-799-6262

Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in May in the United States since 1949. Mental health awareness is an effort to reduce the stigma around mental illness and mental health conditions by sharing. Because of misconceptions about mental health and mental fitness, people often suffer in silence and their conditions go untreated. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act.
Tips for improving your mental wellbeing
(1) Try to relax and reduce stress.
(2) Find ways to learn and be creative.
(3) Spend time in nature.
(4) Connect with others.
(5) Look after your physical health.
(6) Try to improve your sleep.
If you need help, call your Provider. In life-threatening situations, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. If you are suicidal or in emotional distress, consider using the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988 or chat online to connect with a trained crisis counselor.
Sometimes you can’t help but question in life why do we even bother… then a patient leaves a review and reminds us why!
Colore**al cancer is the SECOND DEADLIEST cancer in the United States. Yet it's one of the few cancers that's preventable thanks to screening.
Here are two reasons why getting checked matters:
(1) Screening can find the warning signs of colon and re**al cancer, allowing action to prevent the disease.
(2) Screening can find colore**al cancer early, when treatment is most effective.
If you are 45 years old or older - have you been screened?
Call your provider today to schedule a Cologuard or Colonoscopy.
Cervical Health Awareness Month
More than 11,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. The good news: vaccination (Gardasil) and regular screening can prevent the disease. The HPV test and the Pap test can help prevent cervical cancer or find it early.
The HPV test looks for the virus (human papillomavirus) that can cause cell changes on the cervix.
The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for precancers, cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately.
You should start getting Pap tests at age 21. I you are age 65 or older, you may not need to be screened anymore if— (1) you have had at least three Pap tests or two HPV tests in the past 10 years, and the test results were normal or negative, and (2) you have not had a cervical precancer in the past, or (3) you have had your cervix removed as part of a total hysterectomy for non-cancerous conditions, like fibroids.
