Rosa Lee Baker Obituary 2024 - Joyners Funeral Home & Crematory 09/03/2024

Rosa Lee Baker

Rosa Lee Baker was a faithful Christian woman and a skilled cook. Much of her family remembers gathering in her home for Sunday lunches, where she lined the table with fried chicken, collard greens and scratch-made biscuits.

Her grandsons played basketball in her front yard so often that the grass died off, leaving dirt patches where they ran.

She provided endless laughs to those she was closest to. She was blunt and witty without realizing her own sense of humor. Rosa Lee was unapologetically herself regardless of her circumstances.

As a young woman, she labored. In her home, in her kitchen, and on her father’s farm.

Once married, she rose with the sun to make breakfast for her family. She then set out toward the fields, working with the same drive as the men working alongside her.

She returned to prepare lunch. Rosa Lee repeated that routine each and every day during farming season.

Her family will hold tight to memories created in her presence. They will remember her laughter and boldness.

She was born August 16, 1935, to Herbert and Lina Harrell.

Rosa Lee Baker is preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Moses Baker; son, James Ray Baker; brothers, Pete Harrell, Irvin Harrell, Ray “Bubby” Harrell, and Billy Harrell; sisters, Gray Walston and Helen Owens, and her grandson, John Allen Baker.

She is survived in death by her sons, Larry Baker and wife, Crystal Baker and Allen Baker and wife, Becky Baker; grandsons, Darrell, Chase, Josh, Jim; granddaughters, Kristin and Shannon, and ten great-grandchildren, Alley, Lyla, Paisley, Dallas, Marshall, Rhylee, Waylon, Cheyenne, Audrey, and Charlotte.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 5, 2024 in Macclesfield Town Cemetery, 534 South Fountain Way, Macclesfield. Rev. Carol Bradberry will officiate.

The family will receive friends following the service in Macclesfield Town Cemtery, Macclesfield.

Rick moved to Wilson, North Carolina, to join the management training program at Firestone, where he worked for six years before joining Merck & Company in 1986, and where he spent the remainder of his career.

Rick, who was known for his calm, kind demeanor, and the twinkle in his eye, loved life and being with his family. He enjoyed playing golf, and spending time with the members of his senior golf group at the Wilson Country Club and introducing his grandsons to the game.

Rick truly enjoyed his time at his home in Atlantic Beach and spent fun days on the water and at the beach. Many happy hours were spent by Rick and Debbie in the company of their children, grandchildren, and longtime friends watching sunsets, cooking together, and toasting to life’s good fortune.

Rick and Debbie loved to travel, and had wonderful times in Florida, and sailing to many ports of call around the world. They especially loved traveling to Greece, and recently had a special trip with their girls to Gasparilla Island.

Rick is survived by his wife of forty-seven years, Deborah Glenn Phillips, and his beloved daughters, Kim Phillips Ellis (Scott) and Kathleen Phillips Gibson (Carr). The light in Rick’s life was his four grandsons Graham Ellis, John Carr Gibson, Parker Ellis, and William Gibson, whom he spent hours with and loved so dearly. They brought him great joy and big fun, and he was their “Pops” and very best buddy.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents Chick and Shirley Phillips and is survived by his two brothers and their families, Paul Phillips (Mary) of Wilmington, North Carolina, and David Phillips (Leslie) of Charlotte, North Carolina.

To cherish the great memories and honor his life, Rick’s family will host friends and family for a celebration of life on Sunday, September 8, 2024 from 3pm to 5pm (floating) at The Leaning Tree , 6168 Deans Street, Bailey, NC 27807.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to all that supported Rick in his cancer journey, with special thanks to the compassionate team at Crystal Coast Hospice House and to the incredible medical team at the Duke Brain Tumor Center.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be directed to the SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House, PO Box 640, Newport, NC, 28570.

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

Our History

Since the 1920’s, Joyner’s Funeral Home has been serving families. We are proud to remain a family owned and independent funeral home with a professional staff available 24 hours a day. In 1920, Jesse James Amerson and his partners began the Wilson Furniture Store, located in the 100 block of Goldsboro Street. This business also served the citizens of Wilson in the direction of funerals. At that time, most funerals were conducted in the home and burial followed in a family cemetery. The main need for the families was a place to purchase the casket and someone to help direct the funeral service. Mr. Amerson eventually bought his partners out and joined W. Boswell and A.E. Bishop to form the Amerson-Boswell Furniture Company. The business was located at the corner of Tarboro and Barnes Streets.

The company flourished until 1933 when Mr. Amerson was killed in a car accident. His daughter and son-in-law, Catherine Amerson Joyner and Joseph Clinton Joyner, purchased the business from the remaining heirs and partners. They moved the business to 107 Pine Street and soon after changed the name to Joyner’s Funeral Home. In 1949 Joseph. I. (Joe) Joyner began working with his father. In 1965 he became president and his wife, Annie Thorne Joyner, became secretary-treasurer. On August 1, 1966, the Joyner’s opened the doors to their new facility at 726 Tarboro Street, currently Hamilton Funeral Home. In 1995, Joseph I. (Dell) Joyner Jr. became president. On July 15, 1997, Joyner’s moved into it’s new location at 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway. The new facility allows Joyner’s and its staff to focus on the most important thing for their families and business partners, service!
