As this student’s mom, I can hear the beauty of his breath without even seeing him from above the water. The danger that lies just a few inches below his lips and nose is what makes this picture so ironically peaceful for me.

As this student’s instructor, I notice my hands. They are so close, but far enough to tell him he is doing it by himself. From day one, he has learned that my hands are not there to do it for him. They are there to show him the way. To show him where there’s air and where there’s not, and most importantly how to get to it. To show him how to use the water to his advantage, for buoyancy. To show him where to shift his balance when the water tries to take it from him.

They say a picture speaks a thousand words. For me, it’s just one. LIFE.
