Mother is the one who stays.
After everyone goes.

If the father remembered to give the medicine.

It gets stuck on the slide in the kids space, to play with the baby. She squeezes herself into the corner of her bed in the early hours of the morning to make sure her cough has improved. He keeps the rest of his son’s food, so he doesn’t waste any more time cooking.

It’s when we stay that the mother is born. In full presence.
In the watchful eye.
In the arms that cradle.
In the lap that welcomes you.

Mother is the one who stays.
