Something special is growing at Windham Hospital!

Installation has begun on a new 3,000 square foot hydroponic vegetable garden at Windham Hospital. The garden, located in the lower lot near the hospital’s Valley Street entrance, will be used to grow produce to be distributed to members of the local community in need.

The hydroponic system was built by Levo International, a Hartford-based company that provided the supplies and helped set up the system, with food-safe PVC pipes. The water comes from a basin and is pumped through the pipes, with added nutrients depending on the plants, which assists in faster growth.

Special thanks to all of our colleagues who volunteered to help put the garden together. We can’t wait to see the fruits (and vegetables) of their labor!

Providing safe and innovative care when it is needed most.

Windham Hospital paramedics are now equipped with fresh blood on board their ambulances allowing them to perform blood transfusions after trauma events before the patient gets to the hospital.

The blood is transported in specialized coolers to help keep it fresh and ready for use and is administered through a specialized device that warms the blood from 39 degrees to 100.4 degree when it reaches the patient.

For the Windham paramedics, who are one of the only EMS teams in eastern Connecticut to provide this service, the addition of the blood is a game changer when it comes to on the ground, lifesaving care.

“We get a lot of calls to patients suffering traumatic injuries and losing blood fast and especially in rural areas where the trip to the hospital is longer, they now have a much better chance of surviving,” said Paul Pedchenko, Manager of Windham’s EMS Services, who helped bring the program to Windham.
