Starting System Parts
An immobilizer is an electronic security system installed in most modern cars to prevent unauthorized engine starting. Here's a breakdown of its function and operation:
Function: It acts as a barrier between a thief and hotwiring the car. Even if a thief breaks in and manages to turn the ignition, the engine won't start without the correct key or authorization signal.
How it Works:
- Chip in Key: Your car key has a small embedded chip containing a unique code.
- Reader Coil: When you insert the key or bring it near the ignition (depending on the system), a reader coil around the ignition detects the chip's code.
- Engine Control Unit (ECU): The reader coil transmits the code to the car's computer (ECU).
- Match or No Match: If the code matches the one programmed in the ECU, the engine control unit allows the engine to start. If there's no match, the engine remains immobilized.
An immobilizers significantly deter car theft by making it much more difficult for thieves to steal your vehicle.

Intake Valves Vs Exhaust Valves
Function:
- Intake Valve: Allows fresh air (or air-fuel mixture in modern engines) to enter the engine cylinder for combustion.
- Exhaust Valve: Opens to release the burnt exhaust gases from the cylinder after combustion.
Material and Temperature:
- Intake Valve: Typically made from a material that can withstand cooler temperatures, as the incoming air/fuel mixture is not as hot as the exhaust gases.
- Exhaust Valve: Made from a stronger, heat-resistant material to handle the high temperatures of exhaust gases.
Operation:
- Intake Valve: Opens when the piston descends to draw in the air/fuel mixture.
- Exhaust Valve: Opens when the piston ascends after combustion to expel exhaust gases.
Overall:
- Intake Valve: Brings the "ingredients" (air or air-fuel mixture) needed for combustion into the engine.
- Exhaust Valve: Lets out the "waste products" (burnt exhaust gases) after combustion.
