“Oh! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

Happy Birthday to the Stars and Stripes! This day commemorates the date in 1777 when the United States approved the design for its first national flag.

The stripes represent the original 13 Colonies and the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well; red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.

Appreciate the colors of this national symbol through polarized lenses. Polarized lenses will enhance colors and reduce glare, allowing you to see the true beauty of the American Flag.

What exactly is a cataract?
A cataract is when the natural lens in our eyes becomes cloudy, causing vision to become blurry, hazy or less colorful. Other symptoms include seeing double or a ghosted image out of the affected eye, being extra light sensitive (especially while night driving), having trouble seeing at night or needing more light to read, seeing bright colors as faded or with a yellow hue, or seeing “halos” around lights.

What causes cataracts?
Aging is the most common cause of cataracts. This is due to normal eye changes that begin to happen after age 40. People over age 60 usually start to have some clouding of their lenses. However, vision problems may not happen until years later. There are other factors that contribute to cataracts, which include genetics, diabetes, smoking, eye injury, and damage from UV rays.

Did you know you can slow down the development of cataracts?
Wearing sunglasses while in sunlight and making sure your regular eyeglasses have UV and blue-light protection is the best way to slow progression. Other options to consider include quitting smoking, making sure your prescription eyewear is up to date and taking care of other health problems such as diabetes and hypertension.

Each day, 2,000 Americans sustain job-related eye injuries that require medical treatment.

Common causes of eye injuries at work include eye strain from digital devices, misuse of tools, harmful radiation, chemical exposure, and flying debris like glass or metal fragments. Wearing ill-fitting or improper safety eyewear, or even worse, no eye protection at all, are the main culprits behind most eye injuries at work.

Luckily, 90% of all work-related eye injuries can be avoided or mitigated by wearing proper safety eyewear. Whether it be safety glasses, goggles, face shields or a welding helmet, be sure it is the proper fit and material to provide you with the most protection.

Did you know you can even get prescription safety eyewear? At your next appointment be sure to ask about the best option for you!

Dr. Keith Cash spent most of his childhood growing up in Clemmons, NC. He was introduced to optometry by his personal optometrist Will Berry, OD while attending West Forsyth High School. In 1978 he graduated from Elon College with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Chemistry. He then attended Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN where he received his doctorate in 1982. Dr. Cash returned to Winston-Salem and accepted a position with Charles S. Tara, MD in his ophthalmology practice. Ultimately, he went on to build his own independent optometry practice that has been serving the local community for over 30 years.

Dr. Cash’s practice focus includes glaucoma management, contact lens care and primary eye care. In his spare time, he enjoys many hobbies including golfing, yoga, playing guitar and oil painting. (Be sure to check out his beautiful painting of Pilot Mountain the next time you are in the office.) Keith and his wife, Ruth, enjoy spending time with family and traveling to the North Carolina coast as often as possible.

Dr. Lisa McAllister grew up in Belmont, NC and originally intended to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine at NC State University. During one of her anatomy & physiology labs, she was tasked with dissecting a cow’s eye. What she saw inside fascinated her. She began working as an optometric technician for a local practice in Raleigh where she enjoyed caring for patients and fell in love with the profession. She went on to earn her bachelor's degree in Biology and then to The Ohio State University College of Optometry where she earned both her Doctorate in Optometry and Masters Degree in Vision Science in 2010. Dr. McAllister has served in a variety of practice settings including corporate practice, the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center, and independent private practice in both Florida and North Carolina. She teamed up with Dr. Cash in 2019 and established IdealEyes Optometry in 2020.

Dr. McAllister’s areas of interest include diabetic eye health, glaucoma, dry eye syndrome and contact lenses. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with her husband Jim and their 3 small children, Chase, Katie and Sophia.

Our office entrance can be a bit tricky to find. The main entrance faces Reynolda Road and parking is on the side of the building. We needed a way to identify the optical entrance and I think these adorable awning spectacles turned out just right! 😊👓
