During Black History Month, we proudly celebrate the enduring legacy of our founder, Jim Shaw Sr. A visionary entrepreneur, political leader, and community advocate, he took great pride in revitalizing East Winston and the Liberty Street area. From working at R.J. Reynolds To***co to becoming the first Black owner of a B.F. Goodrich franchise in the Southeast. He was honored for being the largest Gulf dealer in volume, creating revenue and jobs throughout the city. Mr. Shaw was also the first black person to serve on the Board of of the WS Sports commission and first Black Chair of the Better Business Bureau; working to break racial barriers in Winston-Salem. His inspirational journey epitomized entrepreneurship, ownership, and community service.

After owning and operating Jim Shaw Gulf Oil Service and later running a One Stop Shop Convenience Store on Liberty Street - Shaw served as Vice Chairman of the Airport Commission of Forsyth County and President of the Liberty CDC. His vision for our Aviation Career Education program was ignited during a board meeting where the NCDOT was showcasing another ACE Academy. Recognizing the impact of such programs and the lack of diversity, he envisioned providing local youth with a unique aviation experience, leading to our mission of: Empowering every young mind to soar beyond limits through aviation and STEM education, while making impactful strides in reshaping the face and future of aviation.

We were fortunate to give him his flowers while he was here, as there are murals and other historical landmarks commemorating his hardwork and dedication. The intersection of Liberty and 25th Street was named Jim Shaw Blvd in 2007, intentionally excluding “Sr.” to ensure his legacy continues with his son, grandchildren, and beyond. His wife, Clementine Shaw, also notably helped him form the Aviation Career Education Academy. Today, Jim Shaw ACE Academy, operated by the Shaw family, stands as a testament to community support.

Smith Reynolds Airport contributes $894 million, 3,160 jobs to local economy

Smith Reynolds Airport has an $894 million impact on the local economy and supports 3,160 jobs according to a new report from the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Aviation Division.

The North Carolina: The State of Aviation report shows the economic impact of the state’s 72 publicly-owned airports and their related aviation and aerospace assets. The report was created as a guide for aviation investment and to help with recruiting aviation and aerospace businesses.

The report said Smith Reynolds, a county-owned and operated airport located on North Liberty Street, once again created the most economic impact among the state’s 62 general aviation public airports, which don't offer commercial service. The report also found Smith Reynolds contributes $213 million in personal income and $22.3 million in state and local tax revenue. The airport is used for corporate aircraft, air charter services, general aviation and air cargo. Its tenants include Signature Flight Support, Signature TECHNICAir, Piedmont Flight Training, Look Up Aviation, Epes Transport Systems, Avis Budget Group, Aero8, Piedmont Propulsion Systems, the Forsyth Tech Mazie S. Woodruff Aviation Technology Lab and North State Aviation, which does aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO).

“Every two years we are excited to receive the Economic Impact Study since it allows us an opportunity to measure our progress. Forsyth County and our local legislators are committed to the future success of the Airport and millions are being invested in the infrastructure to keep and create jobs,” said Smith Reynolds Airport Director Mark Davidson

The report found that the state’s public airports contribute more than $72 billion to the state’s economy and $3.7 billion in state and local tax revenues. They also support 330,000 jobs that provide $23 billion in personal income.

“North Carolina’s aviation system continues driving the economy by connecting people, companies and communities to markets and destinations worldwide,” said Bobby Walston, director of NCDOT’s Division of Aviation.
