Why Do I Suddenly Have Hearing Loss for No Reason?

Sudden deafness, also known as sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), happens when someone loses their hearing in one or both ears all at once. The exact cause is not always apparent, but it is often due to problems with blood flow, viral infections, or even loud noise exposure. To read more about this, visit: https://hubs.ly/Q02x-_4q0

Do you struggle to hear when there is background noise?

If you can’t hear conversations when there’s background noise, it’s likely because your ears have trouble filtering out the environmental sounds. Trouble hearing, even with mild background noise, is often the first symptom of moderate hearing loss or auditory processing disorder (APD).

Sound familiar? The professional staff at Carolina Hearing Doctors will perform a thorough hearing evaluation and consultation for you!

Hearing aids are useful in improving the hearing and speech comprehension of people who have hearing loss that results from damage to the small sensory hair cells in the inner ear. This type of hearing loss is called sensorineural hearing loss.

Hearing aids work by amplifying sound through a three-part system: The microphone receives sound and converts it into a digital signal. The amplifier increases the strength of the digital signal. The speaker produces an amplified sound in the ear.

Here at Carolina Hearing Doctors, our experienced staff will perform a comprehensive hearing exam and get you the hearing care you need. Call us today!

Metalworking and smithing was actually the world’s first loud job on record. The grinding and clanging of metal on metal can reach over 100 decibels. Metal is a substance that must be molded by force; unfortunately, this makes it a noisy job.

Hearing aids and moisture don’t mix! The combination can reduce hearing aid sensitivity, shorten battery life, and cause corrosion. Moisture can get inside the hearing aid through condensation (especially in humid climates), perspiration, or even earwax. There are multiple Dri-Aid kits on the market as well as more advanced options.

Consult with us at Carolina Hearing Doctors if you have moisture related problems with your hearing aids. We are here to help!

"I can no longer hear out of the corner of my ear."

Everyday we use our peripheral vision, often seeing something "out of the corner of my eye" to orient ourselves to what's going on. It's casual, often unintended, but also so important to how we move through the world.
I've never thought about "the corner if my ear" until a lady said that to me this week. And it's 100% true that our casual hearing is equally important to participating in the world around us. As we lose hearing we lose this casual but automatic hearing orientation. Such a profound but simple truth.
I hope I can help her hear out of those corners again.

Of the Americans age 20–64 who need hearing aids, only 16% use them.

Barriers such as high cost, stigma, lack of accessibility, and poor customer satisfaction have traditionally kept people from buying hearing aids. Perhaps the biggest factor in people opting out of wearing hearing aids is the lack of understanding as to how important our hearing health is to our overall well-being. Hearing loss is linked to cognitive decline, communication problems, balance issues, social isolation, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

Did you know?

Among adults age 70 and older with hearing loss who could benefit from hearing aids, fewer than one in three (30 percent) have ever used them.

High costs, the fear of looking or feeling “old”, and limited access to healthcare may keep people from receiving the hearing care they need. This can have detrimental effects on their overall well-being by causing depression, anxiety, cognitive impairment, and other negative consequences.

Are there surgical procedures or medications that will treat hearing loss?

Treatment depends on the cause of your hearing loss. Medications and surgical procedures are typically used to treat conductive hearing loss (which only affects 5-15% of those with hearing loss). The majority of people with hearing loss have sensorineural or mixed hearing loss. These types of hearing loss often benefit from the use of hearing aids.

Good hearing health habits are vital to maintaining your hearing and your overall quality of life. These 5 simple steps can ensure your hearing health is in tip top shape:

1. Volume. Turn down the volume! 5 out of 10 people listen to their music too loudly. Over time, any sound over 85 decibels or higher can cause hearing loss or other hearing problems, like tinnitus.

2. Protect your hearing. Music, concerts, sporting events, and your job can all have dangerous levels of noise exposure. The only sure fire way to protect your hearing is to use earplugs or noise cancelling headphones.

3. Manage ear wax. Ear wax serves to protect our ears, but in some people it builds up too much and can cause hearing loss and/or damage. NEVER use a Q-tip to clean your ears! Leave the cleaning to your trusted audiologist.

4. Manage stress. High levels of stress can wreak havoc on your ears! Research shows that excessive stress can lead to the development or worsening of tinnitus!

5. Hearing check-ups. Regular hearing exams can ensure hearing loss does not go undetected. The earlier treatment for hearing loss starts, the more successful treatments will be.

Let Carolina Hearing Doctors Center perform a hearing evaluation to help you maintain your hearing health.
